Parent/Child PLC symbols

Hi there.

I'm trying to figure out how to create parent/child PLC symbols. The symbol builder doesn't come with any atttribute templates for PLC's and the help file isn't much help.

What I'm trying to do is to have the power connections for an I/O module as it's own symbol. This is the parent symbol and should have the MFG/CAT/ASSYCODE etc. attributes. If possible, this should also have a list of cross-references to where the child component (the I/O points) are inserted around the project.

I've tried to have a look at the stand alone PLCIO-object that comes with AcadE also, with no luck.

Anyone got a hint on how to proceed with this?

If I understand what you are trying to accomplish I think I would use
Plcioi1t.dwg as an example of the parent library symbol. Then use
Plcioi2.dwg as an example of a child.

To get cross-referencing text you want to make sure to include the XREF*
attributes.

The important thing in naming the symbol is to start with PLCIO.

The Help topic that addresses this type of symbol I think is Symbol
Libraries -> Attribute Requirements -> Schematic Attributes -> PLC Single
I/O Point symbols.

Hope this helps,

Hello again Pat.

Is there a limit on how many connectionpoint one can have in a PLCIO symbol? There are only 2 textboxes for Pin Number/Description in the PLC dialog. And I can't get the dialog to recognize more than one connection point.

I believe if you add more to the symbol then when you edit the block the
dialog shows more (if I am following what you are saying). That said if the
symbol is meant to represent the entire modeul then there are other
attributes needed for that so that you can have multiple addresses, etc.
Maybe if you could attach a picture of what you are trying to create I might
be able to give more specific direction.

See attached picture.

In the Pins group, the Pin 2 text boxes are greyed out.

I can always edit the second pin using Show/Edit Miscellaneous, but it would be nice to have them all in the dialog.

The connection points have X2TERM01, TERM01, X2TERM02 and TERM02 attributes.

And is this what you are intending, for it to be seen as a module or as a
single IO point? My impression was that you were trying to make symbols that
represented single IO points on a module. Can you attach the symbol here so
I can see all the attributes used?

Hello Rhesusminus,

just wondering if you solved this problem because I´m dealing with something similar.

I want to make a plc layout drawing that shows the system configuration. The layout would present the plc rack including the power supply, cpu, input/output modules, HMI etc. On this drawing I´m showing only powersupply of modules and maybe the communication cables.

I´m wondering how I should create these symbols such that the parent/child relationsship is functional and that these symbols have reference to the main I/O modules where the input/output wiring is shown.

Looking forward to your reply.

Regards, Gary
