Hyperlink to a help file (chm)

I'm trying to hyperlink to a certain subject within a help file.
Specifically the "PLC database file editor" found in ADMACE_3_0.chm. The subject would be any other topic but the PLC is one that I'm interested in right now. The main link right now is this: "../../../../Program%20Files/Autodesk/Acade%202006/Help/ADMACE_3_0.chm#PLC database file editor". I've tried adding after the .chm, #PLC database file editor but It doesn't page down to the subject.

I'm probably not looking in the right area to find arguments to add to the line. Any help would be appreciated in link deeper into help files . Thanks in advance.

I'm no html expert, but I thought to link to a certain spot on a web page, there had to be a bookmark tag in the original page to go to.

This isn't a web page. It is a page within the help file. There is a method to do what I am trying to do but my syntax in the original message is not right and I am having difficulty finding the right syntax. Thank you for your reply, though.

.chm is a compiled html file, used often as help files.

I think what you are looking for can be found for any topic, if you do the
following.

1. Open the help file.
2. Select the topic you want to jump to.
3. Right click on the icon located in the upper left hand corner of the
help window titlebar.
4. In the menu that drops down, select "Jump to URL..." you should then
see the jump to URL dialog (attached).
5. I think the information you need is what is found in Current URL: .

For PLC Database editor, it might look something like this:

mk:@MSITStore:C:\Program%20Files\Autodesk\Acade%202006\help\admace_3_0.chm::/HelpSystem/PLC/HTML/plc_dbeditor_ref.htm

I think the following is the section of that URL that you are looking for:

::/HelpSystem/PLC/HTML/plc_dbeditor_ref.htm

Hope this helps.

Thank you, that worked. By the way, what is "mk:@MSITStore:" that precedes the pathing?

I think this notation is specific to Windows HTML help, but I must admit I
am not sure exactly what it is for. I did a quick search on Microsoft's
site and found some information on it, so you might want to check there.
However, I will check to see if someone here in documentation has a better
explanation for you.

Sounds good. Don't bust anything over it. I'll do more checking later when I have some open time. Thanks for your help.

This is an HTML Help protocol used to link to a chm and/or specific topic within the chm. The best place to look would be in the HTML Help chm (C:\WINDOWS\Help\htmlhelp.chm). Search for MSITS*.

The MS-ITS protocol works with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later. If your users are running Internet Explorer 3.0, they need to use the following protocol, which also works with later versions of the browser: mk:@MSITStore:file name.chm::/topic.htm.

Thank you, Heather. I'll dig into this later today. I'm on a roll now 🙂
