Creating Symbols

When I use the symbol builder, create a symbol then I click on WBLK and insert a WD_M block. Is there a way to edit the WD_M block so the layers are formatted the way I want it?

Also, my text style is set on Standard, which is what I want but the text for the attributes are made with a different style. How can I change it so all of my symbols are made with the text style I want.

Thanks.
Dawn

Dawn you do not need a WD_M block inside of your
symbols. The WD_M block is used to mark a new drawing as being an AutoCAD
Electrical format schematic drawing.  But you should just put the WD_M
block inside your border template that you use for electrical drawings so you
are never prompted for it again.  You can set your standard drawing
properties and even add your standard wire layers to your AcadE border template
so you do not have to set those up each time you begin a new drawing.  Just
use the New Drawing button and point to your AcadE border template as a default
and each new drawing will start with whatever drawings properties are defined in
the template.  FYI...the WD_M block is where your drawing properties are
stored.

You can adjust attributes inside of symbols using
the AutoCAD Properties command.  You can do this while you are creating the
symbol or after you have already saved it.  Just open the symbol file with
AutoCAD and adjust to your desire.  Move things around, set attributes to
be invisible or not.  Adjust attribute size, justification,
etc.

Has Symbol Builder been absquatulated in this release? It may not be adscititious.

Symbol Builder is in every release. In version 2009 Symbol Builder went through an overhaul that makes it work inside the Block Editor environment. Recall that the graphics of a symbol are for human enjoyment. AutoCAD Electrical works from the information stored as attribute values.

The revised Symbol Builder allows you to pre-select the type of symbol you wish to create (i.e. PB, CR, LT, etc.) and it supplies a list of appropriate attributes for that type of device. For example if you choose to create a pushbutton (PB) Symbol Builder will list the standard attributes that all symbols require plus the CONTACT attribute for you to enter NC or NO as a default value to designate normally-closed or normally open. Hint: AutoCAD Electrical doesn't interpret the graphical look of a normally-closed symbol to determine that it is normally-closed. It looks at the value stored in the CONTACT attribute. This is how AutoCAD Electrical knows whether to cross-reference the contact as NO or NC and which pin assignments to give it from the Pin List Database.

All that said, AutoCAD Electrical symbols could be created and modified with AutoCAD LT if you are already familiar with the required attribute names and how they are interpreted by the program. The Symbol Builder is a great tool to use at first until you are familiar with the various attributes, but over time you may sometimes find it quicker to just create or edit with standard AutoCAD commands such as ATTDEF, Properties, Move, Erase, Copy, and WBlock. Just remember to name the symbol according to the naming convention of AutoCAD Electrical.

To get all the symbols to match the Standard text
style is easy.

Method 1 - (NOTE run this command overnight as it
takes a while)

BACK UP your Symbol Library

Go to Components->Symbol Library->Modify
Symbol Library

Select the Symbol Library that you
use.

Check the box for Change "WD" Style

Select the font used by your Standard text
style

Click on START

Method 2 - (NOTE will only work on your
system)

Open a block and check what Text style the
attributes are, then close the block without saving.

Open your template dwg and modify the Text Style
used by the blocks to match the settings of your Standard text
style.

With both methods, be sure to use a font that is in
common usage or comes with ACAD.
