Cable shields - why can't I get it to work?

The question is in the subject line. All I want to do is show a shielded cable, complete with core colours.

I select each wire in turn after selecting Miscellaneous>Cable markers with shields>Cable with shield but I get no dialogue box to enter the core colour until I right-click at the end. The end result is shown in the attachment - not exactly what I intended - no opportunity to label the other cores.

I have the same problem.

What can I do to fix this? It's bugging the heck out of me. I know I'm going to run into this a lot in the future.

This is how I do it.

I the insert component button, hit miscellaneous, Shields, Cable Markers with Shields, cable with shield. I insert that into my drawing. That works great.

But when I go Miscellaneous, Shields, cable markers with shields, cable with shield (all 2nd) I get this.

I can't get it to work, any help?

After inserting the cable you need to "edit component" for each individual wire that you've added to the cable. There's a "Wire Color/ID" text box to enter your information.

I guess my problem isn't exactly what's in the above post, maybe I should start a new one, anyway, when I insert my second shield wire (from another page), it does not have the vertical dashed lines in the shield.
Message 5 of 23

Do you shield symbols have the "X8LINKL" AND "X8LINKR" attributes for the dashed link lines to attach to? The bottom symbol attributes would be "X2LINKL" AND "X2LINKR".

It seems like it's not a block but just a command.

When I go to my symbol icon menu wizard, right click on the "second" shield and hit properties. I get this.

It's not a block is it? I can't find it. I'm not sure what the command to execute is all about either.

Cable shields are built on-the-fly so that the number of wires and the rung
spacing can be taken into account. It appears to be adding in the lines
incorrectly for some reason.

Just a guess - but try turning off any snaps. It looks like it is snapping
to the endpoints of the wires when it is drawing in the lines. I will check
to see if there are any logged issues regarding this feature.

What version of AcadE are you using?

I am using AcadE 2008.

I turned off all my snaps, purged and tried to reinsert it again and it still does it.

Does it happen on any drawing, even a new one? If it is only certain
drawings, can you post one? Can you tell me the choices you are making on
the menu and I can try it to see what I get.

Here is my sequence. It really doesn't matter which drawing I use. I'm posting a new drawing with a simple 3-phase circuit.

Insert component,
Click on miscellaneous button,
Click on shields,
Click on cable markers with shields,
Click on cable with shield,
Insert into the drawing.

On same page or another page I would like to inset the second half to show where the cable from. So I:

Click on miscellaneous button,
Click on shields,
Click on cable markers with shields,
Cable with shield (all 2nd)

I insert that onto another cable.

I can do this in different pages in the same project. I tried it in multiple projects. I’ve tried same page in the same drawing

This is so that the cable will carry the same tag on different sheets because it’s the same cable.

Please let me know if you need anything else or need more information.

I still have AutoCAD 2007 loaded onto my computer. I don't feel real comfortable with 2008 yet and I'm still trying to merge everything. I don't know if that makes a difference or not. I can make it work in 2007.

I wasn't able to reproduce the exact smae issue but it looks to me like your
library symbols are incorrect. They don't have the X#LINK attributes that
are needed for the connections to be drawn. Do you have a backup of the
original library symbols HW02_* and HW01_*? I would try and reload those and
see if that corrects this issue.

I copied all of those drawing from my 2007 library to my 2008 library.

I purged my drawing, tried it again and same thing.

I copied all of the drawing from my 2006 libraries to my 2008 library and same thing.

Any more ideas?/

Do you have the original 2008 versions of those symbols? Can you zip up the
library symbols and post them so I can look at them?

Also, purging a drawing doesn't help if that symbol still exists on the
drawing. So make sure to try things on a blank new drawing.

No I don't. I did as you said but didn't back them up Sorry.

Here is what I have in my 2008 Library as of right now.

Back up the symbols you have and try the attached symbols on a new drawing
and see if they correct the issue. If they do I will find out how you can
reinstall the original library symbols. I can't guarantee these are
original, they are just what I currently have in my 2008 jic125 library.

Thanks for your help Pat.

Ok. Glad that was it. If you have other library issues you might want to
reload the original library. This may require editing the registry or doing
a Repair on the installation. Let me know if you decide you need to do this
and I can get the steps.

Hi Pat or anyone watching this post,

The problem with the shield insert seems to exist in ACADE 2009
The install is an upgrade from 2008 - since uninstalled.
I had no call to use the shield in 2008 so never picked up on this

Any suggestions what to do first to resolve this? (IEC symbols)

The HW2_ symbols seem to have the left right link tags but the right link doesn't fill

Thanks DavidC

DavidC, can you provide a drawing that you tried to insert this on? Either
post it here or you can send it directly to my email at
pat.murnen@autodesk.com.

Thanks,
