ACADE Tutorial

Can anyone help me? I have purchased ACADE but I am struggling to learn the basics. I am a qualified electrical engineer and I have previous experience of mechanical ACAD 2005. I can only find mechanically biased tutorial links on the AutoDesk website and my local college only runs courses on ACAD2005 mechanical. Any help, advice or links would be appreciated. Regards, David Sims

I have read with great interest, the comments generated by my initial
request for help with ACADE. I still have not been able to find anything
remotely comparable to the tutorials issued with the early versions of
AutoCAD mechanical or AutoCAD Learning assistance.
I have had several discussions privately via email with new users who are
unhappy with the level of tutorial support for this product. It seems that
there are products available but these products are quite expensive I
personally feel that the product is not complete unless it comes as a
package with a comprehensive tutorial and exercises that allow new users to
learn the product in a structured way.
I feel that the booklet included with the product is inadequate for this
purpose. I have had more comprehensive literature included with a graphics
card I purchased recently.
I am aware that questions can be asked via the web discussion group and
Autodesk and other ACADE users are very helpful, but if I were to post every
question that arises during my attempt to stumble through the learning
process, I would take up the greater portion of the forum.
Am I wrong to expect a comprehensive tutorial and worked through exercises
to be included with the product without the need to pay out even more money
to Autodesk for various add on packages?
I realise that these comments may rock the boat slightly but I feel that if
Autodesk are genuinely interested in how the product is perceived by users
they will welcome the feedback.
I would be grateful for any comments or help in obtaining tutorial
exercises.

Regards,

David

Hi David,

Thanks for your candid feedback. We value your honest feedback regarding
your experience with the product. This helps us make it better for you in
the future. Here are a couple of comments, it would be great if you could
review and provide feedback:

- In response to feedback in this newsgroup, the ACAD E 2006 Getting Started
Guide was greatly enhanced to include all of the topics/content of the old
"VIA" tutorial that was going around in this thread earlier. Do you have
ACE2006 coming on subscription? If not, let me know. I would like to get
your review and feedback of the new material.

- Five new e-Learning lessons were recently posted to the subscription
center to help new users get up to speed. These are electronically driven
lessons conducted over the internet. We have fifteen more of these lessons
coming this summer also.

- New training material is coming soon that is nearly double the size of the
ACAD E 2005 book. This is something that users have to pay for but I
thought it would be worth a mention.

Helping new users come up to speed on ACAD E is one of my top priorities so
I would value any continued feedback you or others can provide on your
experience. Let me know what specific areas of implementation caused you
grief during implementation. This level of feedback lets us know where to
focus areas of development and documentation.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Scott Reese
Product Manager

Scott,

Is there going to be a manual like the 500 page manual that used to ship with VIA, which explained the program in more detail than just a tutorial? Topics like symbol creation, what the needed attributes are and descriptions. I have not even been able to find the naming convention for the symbols in the library. Where is the more advanced documentation? We need what is beyond the tutorials.

It is really sad how the documentation has slid downhill since Autodesk took over this product. The documentation for vanilla AutoCAD is so good, it makes the lack of it in electrical look bad.

It is great all the stuff you have coming out, but all that stuff should be an addition to the documentation, not the proper documentation itself. Looking at this board it is obvious that the documentation is sub-standard, so please stop trying to sell us what should come with the product. Go beyond what we expect, take a great piece of software and give it documentation as complete as the standard AutoCAD documentation and you will have the best software package ever.

It is a great piece of software. What frustrates me so much about the lack of proper documentation.

This board has been a tremendous help in my learning and I thank everyone here.

My humble opinion,
Ted

Thanks for the reply Scott.
I have reviewed the PDF file for AutoCAD electrical2006 and it does seem to
be an improvement on the 2005 version but it is still not a comprehensive
study of this software program.
I agree totally with the comments made by Ted (tncp)
I have struggled with some of the most basic problems (I imported my own
drawing templates into the ACADE working template area then tried to place
drawing symbols onto the new drawing but they come in at the wrong scale. )
I looked through the tutorial and searched the help files but could find no
mention of the problem or the solution.
I do not have ACAD 2006 and I am not sure if it is coming on subscription.
I would quite happily switch over to the 2006 version if it has greater
support integrated within it.
By the way, it does seem that there is a lot of discussion around the 2006
product, bearing in mind that I am trying to learn the most current package
would I be better off learning the beta version of the 2006 product or
learning the 2005 product and upgrading/learning the 2006 product when it
becomes commercially available.

Regards,

David

Hi David,

Sorry for the delayed reply. I was traveling back from Asia. Still
recovering from the jetlag.

Noticing the "IEC" in your email address, I suspect that moving to ACE2006
may be good for you since we made significant improvements to the IEC
library.

Our documentation team is very keen to making the improvements to the
documentation but they need your help.

Heather Schwartz heads up the documentation for ACE and has started a thread
(4/27) asking for input on how we could make things better for you. Please
provide her with candid but constructive feedback on what you would like to
see. If you are interested, we could form a steering committee that
consists of AutoCAD Electrical users (both new and old) as well as a mixed
bag of Autodesker's to help drive things along.

I think we all agree that the documentation for ACE2006 is much better but
we want to continue making improvements so help us out by telling us what
you would like to see.

Thanks again for your participation in this discussion group.

Regards,
Scott

Hi Ted,

I'm glad the board has been helpful, I think it's one of the great things
that Autodesk has brought to this package. It's really a good way for users
to talk to other users as well as openly communicate back to us. Believe
me, we watch this group regularly and appreciate the feedback.

As for your comments on the documentation, please see my response to David
in this thread. Let's continue the discussions so we can continue to
improve.

Regards,
Scott

Hi Scott,
Thanks for the reply.
I am pleased that Heather as started the thread asking for feedback and I am
sure that we will be communicating very shortly.
I am very interested in helping to improve the product by sharing my
learning experiences and problems with other members of the forum and with
heather in particular.
I can assure you that my comments will always be candid and constructive.
I have checked my software package and I have the Full Educational Version

I purchased the package through my local further education college approx 7
weeks ago.
My question is: Where do I go to download the ACADE 2006 beta software?

Hi David,

We look forward to your continued feedback. As for the beta version of
ACE2006, it is no longer available. Once the commercial version became
available, our beta program was closed down. If you need to get a
commercial license, you would need to go through your local reseller. If
you don't know your local reseller, let me know and I will connect you with
our Autodesk office in Farnborough or with a reseller in your area. They
can answer any specific questions you have as well.

I think using an educational license is ok as long as it is being used for
learning through a college and not commercial use.

Regards,
Scott

may be good for you since we made significant improvements to the IEC

Regards,
Scott

Hi Dave
I've also just started off working with ACE - a vast improvement, and learning curve for me from using ACAD LT.
I'd be a happy camper if you could send me a copy of that file .

e-mail: markus.hildebrandt@triboard.co.nz; - please change the file extension to .txt as .zip files are filtered out by our e-mail system. I'll change it back after receiving the file.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Caddy,
I don't actually have the VIApdf file. However I do have the Autodesk
ACADE2006 pdf. This is a vast improvement on the 2005 version and I am
sending you this by private email.
The file is zipped using WinZip. If you do not have a copy of WinZip you can
download a free trial version at www.cnetdownload.com

Hello everyone,

There are 2 different versions of the AutoCAD Electrical Getting Started manual shipping on the 2006 CD. If you select 'AutoCAD Electrical 2006 Getting Started Guide' on the CD installation screen, the correct 2006 version opens. However, if you try to open the Getting Started manual from the LaunchPad, an older version (2005) of the Getting Started Guide opens.

You can open/save the AutoCAD Electrical 2006 Getting Started Guide from the Bin\ACADFeui\docs folder on the installation CD or you can obtain the pdf from the Autodesk Product Support website (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?id=5486172&linkID=4199154&siteID=123112).

Thanks,
Heather Schwartz
