About this Electrical package ...

... do future plans include equipment modeling like transformers, mcc's,
panels, junction boxes, heat tracing, cable tray, cable routing, lighting etc.
with appropriate embedded intel, boms, cross referencing etc?

As it stands now it is an incomplete package from my perspective, though I
recognize you have to start somewhere.

Thanks,

Michael.

Some of what you list is already in the current shipping product including
cross-referencing of parent/child schematic devices (ex: coils/contacts),
linkage between schematic and physical representations of each control
device (ex: motor starter coil/contacts on schematics and physical
representations in a cabinet or MCC), part assignment intelligence, and
various types of BOM and wire/cable report extractions. It is "open" in that
if the content does not fully cover your needs, you can expand it. Since it
relies on standard AutoCAD block/attribute technology to create
"intelligent" schematic and physical panel/wiring diagram layout drawings...
you can create your own custom symbols sets, if desired, and integrate them
into the application.

Thanks Nate, but I am quite aware of what it can do, as I had gone to the
website, downloaded their factoid PDFs etc. What is apparent to me is that
there is no ( 3D ) modeling, and that's the nature of my inquiry. Like I
inferred in my first post, it looks to me like a start, rather than a complete
package.

For those that don't know:

I don't mean to be rude, but can you guys address my question? Does it do 3D
modeling, and if so, to what extent ( it doesn't appear to according to your
docs )? If it does not, are there plans to go in that direction?

Thanks you,

Michael.

Most of the application's current "panel/physical electrical device content"
is in 2D "footprint" format. If a 3D representation, let's say a motor
starter, is substituted (user is free to do this), the product will work
fine with it too. If this 3D representation is set up with wire connection
point attributes in 3D space that map back to the schematics (mapping done
by overall device tag-ID and terminal pin number match-ups), AutoCAD
Electrical can both annotate the 3D model with the schematic wire connection
information and also extract and report these physical XYZ connection values
in its wire connection "from/to" reports. If you are expecting shortest
distance routing through designated wireways and panduit or equivalent, you
will not see this in the current shipping product.

We have no existing electrical content to be able
to quickly construct or automate the generation of this type of
drawing. The user would fall back to creating this type drawing from the
standard, full suite of AutoCAD editing/modeling commands
that are the inherent part of AutoCAD Electrical
2004.

They already have a package that does what you are asking for in the Building Systems. It has 2d and 3d intellegent parts which can be tagged and scheduled. I would like them to add some of this functionallity to that package which would allow more tools for industrial type building projects.

Indeed, looks like that product has some of the core functionality (
http://tinyurl.com/pwiv ), I'll keep an eye on it. Thank you for the heads up.

Michael.

I've been able to model these things ( c/w embedded intelligence
) since 1995 using applications I wrote, I just wanted to know
whether Autodesk had a stable off the shelf alternative. There
are third parties that can do much of this stuff ( I'd post the
name but then you'd nuke my post ), though I would personally
prefer to stay with my home grown stuff or an Autodesk product,
the very reason I inquired.

So to summarize, you are saying there is no intent to provide
full 3D modeling with this particular Electrical package now or
in the future; it is an intelligent ( cross referenced ) 2D
diagramming program.

Thanks for the info.

"Competitive product" was one I wrote, and it is not for resale.
