Wish #16 & #17 - pipe stuff..

Wish # 16 –

The ability to predefine a series of Pipes and structures in one Piperun for editing purposes. I.E. pick the entire Storm pipe/structures that are running down a particular street and have C3D list these pipes in order of stationing. And then have the ability to (like in LDD) edit the pipe sizes, slopes, inverts, types and structure types. More importantly the ability here to edit an entire column of info at once and NOT one at a time as we have to do now……make this like a spreadsheet….

Wish #17 –

A materials table for pipes. Let use pick a network and spit out a quantities table listing all of the pipes and structures with totals! Not asking for much here?

for sure. i am working on a pipe project right now that i need to do some
excel work with. for the most part i cannot complain, but it sure would be
nice if the pipes understood a little bit more about their run orientation-
such as what flows into what else, and could be organized in the stack that
way.

Right now, I use a copy-paste of the prospector into excel, and manually
hammer out my runs based on mh numbers. from there, i can use a lookup
formula for inverts, etc. but it would be nice if i didnt have to do that
first part.

Nick and I were messing around with the idea of having a VBA that could
break into runs based on some sort of mh naming convention or numbering
order, but so far we havent gotten past the idea stage.

... just a little thinking out loud here ...

Prospector, by default, sorts the pipes and/or structures by name, and the names are assigned as the network is created, which may or may not reflect the final design. A network component renaming tool might be nice. (like the parcel rename/renumber)

This may not be the answer, but might make it easier to manage internally or when exported.

Thanks to 07 networks can't be interconnected like 06 could. I suspect this might have been done in preparation for future designing tools. So, I think some type of a sub group would help to further organization. And, being sub-networks or child networks, of a parent network, they should be allowed to share a common structure.

Now that things are organized, a network table shouldn't bee too hard to implement. The table could handle things based on network and sub net.

I like that rename/renumber idea.

I have tried without success in creating my pipes in an order that makes
sense- but i always wind up with odd and crazy numbers, and wind up
renumbering by hand.

it is possible to make the changes with vba, so i am told, because the
program identifies pipes and structures by their handles and not so much by
their "numbers" so i shall be exploring this a little more.

it is still far more fun than changing dtext, but i know the power is there
to make it better.

Add me to the support of this idea.

We usually number structures dependent on increasing stationing on an alignment, by structure type and pipe name...

Foul sewers numbered...1,2,3 etc
structures labelled... MH 1-1, MH 1-2 etc for manholes
Maiintenance structures we would call up s MS 1-3 etc

Stormwaters would use letters...ie SW Line A
Structures would be named MH A1, MH A2 etc

It is possible to have these all created automatically by using a strict procedure when creating the network and have labelling automatic...problems start when we might need to iterate the design due to previously unknown constraints...say we need to add a manhole...then the numbering system goes out the window...and the table editting starts...
It would be nice to be able to define a labelling system that suits and run it a bit like applying rules to rename structures etc as required.

Peter.
