SSA 2012 online courses and calculation errors

Hi,

Here are some questions from Sweden about Storm and Sanitary Analysis 2012 which we have installed together with AutoCAD C3D2012 SP3.

We have the User’s Guide that came with the program, but is there more information and online courses? We can’t find any on Youtube or on your webpage. Only short introductions to the program is available.

We would e.g. like some help with the selection of different parameters for catchments, and a description of the differences between the TOC methods and the Hydraulic routing methods.

Which Hydrology method is most suitable for pipe dimensioning of a housing area (30 hectare), or a part of a municipality (100 hectare)? What Hydraulic routing specifications is suitable?

Should we use EPA SWMM (as we have done now) or is the rational method preferred for this purpose?

Calculation errors:

We’ve noticed some errors in the program. Is this something you are aware of?

We have been using EPA SWMM (Hydrology method), Horton (infiltration method), Hydrodynamic Link routing method and Force main equation Hazen-Williams when doing calculations. Some calculated values puzzled us when running the model with metric units, so we made a copy of the model and changed settings to US units and changed the input values to corresponding US units to see what the results would be.

This is what we found out when comparing the results:

-When using metric units the calculated TOC is too high for a catchment. Approximately four times higher than when we ran the model with US units. With US units the results were reasonable compared with calculations made by hand.

-The calculated total runoff from a catchment is presented with wrong decimal. E.g. in metric units it says “Total runoff (m3)” but the calculated value is presented in liters.

When using US units the calculated Total runoff from a catchment displays as “Total runoff (cft)” and e.g. a value 47,78. But it should be 477,8 cft. A calculation by hand confirmed this.

Are there more errors regarding unit conversion (in addition to those we found), that we should pay attention to when using the program with metric units?

Are these errors corrected in the 2014-release?

Best regards

It is unlikely that anything has been done to SSA since AutoDESK purchased this from Boss International.  Perhaps if you copied your remarks and sent them to:

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=1109794

you might get some feedback.

Bill

BTW, you probably have already seen this but:

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=1109794

is a good place to start. Chris Meader is the founder of Boss International.  Select one of the 3 videos on this page and look at the other videos on the page(s) that follows.

I am also looking for ways to learn how to use SSA, have you found any good solutions?

Also in response to wfberry, the second link you gave is the same as the first, so I was not able to find the videos you were refering too.

SSA is DOA. Proceed with caution.

Are there any programs that work with AutoCAD on stormdrain design and analysis?

Mike -

I don't know of any short courses online that cover the functionality.

As for Hydrology methodolgies - the EPA SWMM or Rational are pretty well suited to a design study as you proposed.

Can you provide your model?  I will be sure to have support look into the issues you report.

Feel free to email me using this model - first.last@autodesk.com
