XREF a DGN into a DWG file.

Good morning all....

I am xrefing a DGN file into my DWG file in Civil 3d 2012.  When I go into Layer Manager I cannot see any of the DGN's Levele/Layers?  Tell me this isn't so? Am I missing something here, how is one suppose to control Layers in the DGN when it is XREF'd into a DWG?

Thanks in advance,

K

It is possible your DGN is empty, except for internal reference files contained in the DGN file.

Open the DGN file and examine the reference files.

You may need to create a separate DGN file that makes all of the references "ACTIVE", same as "BIND" in autocad.

You may also have a layer filter appplied which hides xref layers.

I haven't used DGN's as references to any extent but one thing to be aware of is that DGN's can have multiple model spaces, so when you attach a DGN you need to specify which model within the DGN you want to attach. You may have chosen a model with nothing in it.

I believe commandline>ULAYERS brings up the dgn layers (levels).

Can one examine a .dgn file without Microstation?

I have received 4 No large .dgn files (200-400MB).

I'm using Civil 3D 2018 which refuses to DGNIMPORT any of them, I can XRef them all in but see nothing.

ULAYERS brings up the .dgn layers but alas I can't see anything, even zooming right in, right out - nadda... confusing.

Would a 2020 .dgn display - is there dodgy backward compatibility between the 2 systems?

You are replying to a year 2012 thread.

Could be bad export from MicroStation.

Test using another program like Google Earth Pro=>File=>Import=>Change files of type to MicroStation=>Browse to and select your MicroStation dgn=>In the GE Pro pup a check in the dgn box  in the Places Panel on the left.
