Why do referenced objects disappear?

I have a project in vault with drawings split up by the data that they contain (alignment.dwg, surface.dwg). Every so often, when I open up one of these drawings, all of the data references disappear, and only show as a "broken reference." Any ideas about what's going on here?

I was hoping Vault was going to eliminate that. I've seen it with data
shortcuts in '06, but couldn't find a solution.

When you check out the drawing are you including all dependencies and also
have the box checked for get latest version? If your working directory
doesn't have all the files the data references come from, then you will not
see them. I have also found that if the path to your working directory is
different from the path of the person that created the data reference, the
reference will not show up. For this reason I have decided to create
everyone's working folder on a network share location so everyone is using
the same directory and path. I haven't been able to test it much, but from
what I read, it is possible.

IMO, it's the only way to fly in the CE world.
