What is this icon?

Can someone tell me what this icon is? I am using Civil 3d 2014 and I think it appeard after I created a large surface. Civil 3d created an external file to link the surface due to the size, but now the icon appears in the upper left hand side of the model view everytime I open Civil 3D 2014.
