Weird grading object issue

This one will be a bit hard to explain...

I have a grading object in a "base" drawing with the style set up to send all the various display lines, daylight lines, etc., to various layers. The cut and fill daylight lines will disappear when their respective layers are frozen but when I xref this drawing into a "sheet" drawing those lines reappear and will not turn off, even if all applicable layers are frozen. When "xlisted" the lines are said to be on the "0" layer but I double-checked the style and nothing (including the grading object) is mapped to the "0" layer. I cannot for the life of me get these lines to disappear in the sheet drawings, though they will in the base drawing.

Am I missing something, or is this some kind of glitch? Any ideas, or do I have to explode my grading object in order to get these lines to disappear?
