volumes and merging surfaces

i've got an existing surface  and a proposed surface. the project calls for some cut and fill volumes. they want to have at least 14.5" of fill to reach the proposed grade. so what i've done is take the proposed surface and drop it 14.5". that will show the areas that need to be cut to the minimum 14.5" depth so i can get a cut volume. now i need to merge the existing surface and this lowered surface to create a new surface so i can figure out the fill volume. i've got the cut volume figured out but i don't know how to merge the existing surface and the lowered proposed surface to create a new surface that i can use to figure the final fill volume. any ideas?

Create a new surface.  Under the new surface, expand Definition, right-click on Edits and choose Paste.  Paste the Existing, then the proposed.
