Vertical Curves

I was just wondering if anyone knew of a simple tutorial or one that they thought was helpful for understanding how to draw vertical curves in Civil 3d. I am have much trouble understanding which ones to use ect. to get the result that I am looking for. Thanks

My approach to vertical curves is
draw the lines between VIP (vertical intersection points)
insect the vertical curves based on the specification used K value or curve length.

Hope that helps, is not specify what problem you are having and we can tackle it specifically

thanks that does help theres just an awfully confusing amount of different curves, thats exactly what I needed because I do know the K value and curve length so that is the one I was looking for.

I got away from drawing vertical curves based on a K value. I you define it based on a K value you can't change the length to make it an even number.

I use the Free Vertical Curve (Parameter) and specify a length. Then I edit the curve lengths with the Profile Grid View. That way I can adjust the length to achieve the desired minimum K value.

I use the "Free Vertical Curve" feature it allows me to set my K value or curve length as required in the specifications I use. Note that if you give it the K value when creating the curve you will only be able to change the K value when you are editing that curve.

I mention this because I have unwittingly created curves on the same vertical alignment using the curve length then the K value on the next curve. When I went back to refine my alignment I found some curves had the K value enable and others the curve length! Moral of the story pick one and stick with it!

Hope I have helped the issue some.

Just in case you run into this again, if you switch to Component Editing
mode, you will see K becomes the editable value, where as in PVI editing
mode, Length is the editable value.

I found that the fixed vertical curve(Two points parameter) gave me just what I wanted. Thanks for the good advice

Anyone else think that this functionality should be a part of regular AutoCAD? I still don't understand why you can't draw parabolas', verticle curves, ect with plain AutoCAD

Thanks James. Great tip. It took me a couple of minute to find it.

If anyone else is having trouble finding it see the attached image.

You CAN draw a parabolic vertical curve in AutoCAD. Draw a polyline from
the BVC to the PVI to the EVC. Set the SPLINETYPE variable to 5 (quadratic
spline). PEDIT that polyline and spline it.

But why would you want to since Civil 3D does a great job with it already?

Just a thought. I didn't know that it was possible

What purpose is there to draw a vertical curve in vanilla Autocad?
