User Percentages Civil 3D vs. Land Desktop

Is there any current data showing percentages of firms that have made the jump? I know that the quick surveys during C3D webcasts appear to show the majority of the users working in C3D now. I don't know how accurate that may be though.

Well, I think the results are skewed there, because people who do not have C3D or are not planning a move to C3D in the very near future would have little reason to watch the webcasts. So of course most of the people there are using C3D.

This DG would have the same problem, if we created a poll asking how many of us are using C3D. Naturally, most people would respond that they are, indeed, using C3D. Do the same poll in the Land Desktop group, though, and you'd probably get a different answer.

From what we've been able to tell, talking with people from other companies, we are definitely one of the few in this area using C3D. There aren't a whole lot at this point, and only one of the thirty-odd companies we work with regularly has switched. But there are several others who are contemplating it, and a couple of them have even started the process of learning C3D, although they are still using Land Desktop for production. And of course, there are a couple who started to use C3D and gave up in disgust before working through the initial learning curve.

I still have quite a few people downloading my old Sincpac routines for Land Desktop, although they seem to be drawing less interest than they did four months ago.

That is the reason I thought the numbers would not be accurate as well. But I am still curious if Autodesk has real numbers for comparison.

Do you really think they'd share them? The closest thing to impartial
(and it was still funded by adesk,) is the CE News poll.

Hi,

Another consideration is that in countries which have a different software
history - ie Softdesk/Land Desktop was not the dominant Civil Software, the
take-up and use of Civil 3D is likely to be significantly different from the
North American experience.

I don't have any numbers, but would expect Civil 3D take-up and use in
Australia would outnumber Land Desktop by a significant factor.

The Australian scene is further different in that CADApps have filled two of
the major weaknesses of Civil 3D with their Advanced Road Design (and it's
derivatives like Corridor Ezy) and Stringer products.

I guess a little background in why I am asking.

Our office has been using C3D for about 3 years now. We are currently in the process of merging with another firm that is using Land Desktop. I have been told by a few individuals from the other office that this is going to be an issue.

I recently received an email from a future colleague that had these quotes in it.

"The rest of the industry does not seem eager to switch to a whole new platform"

"To me it doesn't makes sense to switch to Civil 3D until the rest of the industry switches and AutoDesk stops support Land Desktop."

I was hoping to get a percentage of users on both showing that "the rest of the industry" is making the switch.

Tell him most of the Country's leading firms are at least partial users and the future direction is clear.
If you wait for the rest to switch you will be in last place.:-)

James,

Additionally be aware that Autodesk certainly did not create the 3D model, as it has been in use in Transportation solutions provided by Bentley Systems for many years. Respondents to the pole may also be coming from those groups. 🙂

Our reseller was amazed I am trying 3d. They have very little interest expressed. I only use it for the corridor function. Everything else I use LDD.

The two of you should sit down and run the same project and see who comes out ahead. I bet your future colleague might just be put in his place. Assuming you know Civil pretty well...

Move forward or get run over is my moto ... seems like he wants to get run over by the industry before moving out of the way. How is that a good plan?

for some reason i am amazed people are still saying these things. Civ3D vs LDD? i would quite my job if my firm went back to LDD. 🙂

Luckily we never used LDD here so they have nothing to go back to. 100% commited to getting Civil to do everything we need it to ... minus H&H of course. But that's coming soon!

LDD should be extinct ... it is a dinosaur after all.

In my CAD pit 5 out of 20 use C3D to different extents.
The rest use LDD or do redlines in vainilla.
Personally, I'm sticking with C3D full time except when I want to use the hydrology menu.
You can't beat the rush of not knowing if you gonna get that fatal, terminal, kaput, all corrupted error 45 minutes before the deadline. It's the next best thing to being a highwire walker.

Don't forget God, an intelligent being or just some large bang (depending on your beliefs) used the 3D model long before Bentley. I think the original 3d model is best since I can actually touch it.

As a Christian I will choose God.. His original model was perfect..And all he needed to do was speak it into existance, and it was "Good".

Wouldnt it be nice if the software worked the same way 🙂

Hi Murph,

Hey. I have retired, but can't switch my brain off. I'm now continuing
with a hobby. I even plan to learn something about Civil 3D over the next
year or so, but customising it is much more fun.

I wrote my second VB.Net program this morning. Other than various mouse
clicks to select things, I wrote a web browser to link to CADApps web site.

Here's the complete code:

Public Class Form1

Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)
Handles Me.Load

WebBrowser1.Navigate("http://www.cadapps.com.au")

End Sub

End Class

The only typing I had to do was:

WebBrowser1.

Everything else was created by the software. Simple.

Regards

Laurie

Yeah but Mike we are talking here about using all three at once not just two out of three at a time.:-)
