Hi guys
We are going to be starting a job soon, where everything has to be "BIM". I was just wondering what Autodesk software people are using for doing under slab drainage? We were thinking of just using Civil 3D, but thought it will be so time consuming, and not practical having alignments for every spur coming from slab pop ups. Just wondering how other people tackle this in "BIM land"? 🙂

What is BIM, Revit or interop between specialist consultants??
We have been working on BIM jobs for a couple of years now and we ALWAYS use Civil3d for the (below ground) Drainage works. Some companies claim they can do the design in Revit but it is not the right tool for the job here.
Here's what I recommend.
Detail the drainage in Civil3d and share with the following formats. Bim model in Navisworks format. Coordination model in 3d dwg (exploded twice to solids). This can be imported into revit via a generic mass family, search for this in Revit discussion for more info I posted..
Coordinate on the fly using 3d solids (foundations etc) in Civil3d exported from Revit only doing a final check using navisworks clash detection.
When you export to Navisworks some information does not transfer. There is a VBa application which will export pipe and structure information to excel this ships with civil 3d. Use this to save a spread sheet of the pipe and structures.
In Navisworks, set up a data link using the obj handle and link this to the excel sheet. (search the net for a complete detail on doing this) This will attach a custom data properties tab to the objects and allow some of the ignored information or custom part contexts to be exported. Finally use the Publish NWD tool in navisworks to bind this information into the model.
Recommended Learning for Essential Civil3d BIM.
VB.net or VBa. Enables you to tweak and export additional information / add data tags to the network through the pipe to excel functions although this can be done in the exported excel sheet instead.
Basic Part catalog customisation. Editing the Params file to add custom part contexts for information such as notes, spec or anything else required.
NB. These custom contexts do not transfer to navisworks and hence the need for using a excel data link tool (the nwc export / import tool is not concise enough for true BIM).
