Unable to attach DWF or FBX from Navisworks

I am getting an error in Civil 3d 2011 (latest patches) when I try to attach a DWF file that I created from Navisworks Manage 2011.      The error says, "DWFATTACH - Invalid File..."

Also, I exported a fbx file from Navisworks.  With fbx I do a file, import and get a similar error, "the file cannot be imported because it is an unsupported format"

You'd think autodesk products would play well together....

Can the DWF and FBX be opened correctly in Navisworks?

Does this happen wth all DWFs and FBXs from Navisworks?

Can you try creating a DWF and FBX from Gatehouse.NWD that should be in your Examples folder in Program Files/Autodesk/Navisworks Manage 2011 (or Simulate) and let me know if these can be brought into Civil?

What does the full error message say?

Hey Lee,

The dwf can be opened in both Navisworks and Design review.   The error message that Civil 3D gives is:

"

DWFATTACH - Invalid File

This file cannot be opened.

The problem can be caused by sweveral things:

- The data in the files is corrupted

- The file is an earlier format that is no longer supported

-The file format is not supported.

Try to obtain a better copy of the file, recreate the file using different settings, or convert the file to a supported format.

"

Opened gatehouse_pub.nwd in Manage, output to dwf, and I get the same error.

I appreciate the help

Sorry for the delayed response on this one.

ATTACH only applies to 2D drawings, so the 3D Navisworks DWF's will not be supported.

I am also getting this error message, but my DWF is a 2d DWF.  I have no idea what the original softare was that created the DWF, but when I do a save as in ADR 2012 as a DWFx or DWF and try to insert it into Civil 3D 2012 it gives me the DWFATTACH - Invalid File error.

i just tried attaching a 3d DWF from navisworks back into regular CAD. If we an attach 3d DWG files, why not 3d DWF? Smiley Sad

The ATTACH command in AutoCAD based products inserts an external reference, raster image, or underlay (DWF, DWFx, PDF, or DGN files) in the current drawing. This has to be 2D and is usually a sheet from a DWF.

DWF's from Navisworks are never intended to be design data, just review data. A solid block in AutoCAD is handled very differently in Navisworks for performance and review reasons.
