traverse analysis - newbie question

We are new to Civil 3D.

I would like to take a point file (ascii  PNED)  and import the points into C3D....these points would represent the resultant coordinates of a raw traverse.  My question....Can I use these points to create / analyze the traverse, or do I have to have the original raw data file?

Tim, If I understand your question correctly, yes you can create the travers manually if you do not have the raw data but have all the details.

Depending on what you want to accomplish, you have some options.

1. in the survey tab, analyze panel, run the coordinate geometry editor.

2. in the Survey tool space, in the current survey database, create a network, expand the network collection, select traverses right click and new.

This is just an overview, there is a lot more detail and all depends what you are trying to accomplish.

Being that you are new to C3D, there may be some tutorials that you could go through. C3D comes with a few. There may be some on YouTube or contact your local reseller to see if they have some.

I hope this helps and is not too vague

Tim,

Here's another option, a Traverse Adjustment with Mapcheck:

Unfortunately,

1. The polyline method does not allow you to hold any point other than the POB.

2. The Coordinate Geometry Editor does not permit a least sqaures correction method.

3. Creating a traverse in the Survey DB will not allow you to save the results to a file or the DB. If you close the editor all data is lost. This bug exists in 2013-15. If you have 2012 this option works and IMO is your best bet.

John,

Granted 1 & 2. I didn't know about the #3 bug. Thanks for the info on that. Tim doesn't have the RAW file, so his options are limited.

HTH Dave. If anyone would like to reference this case with Autodesk,
