Hi,
As far I have experimented, you need to establish at least the initial
station by coordinates IN THE FIELDBOOK before the traverse adjustment
process will work. This need seems a bit peculiar as there are all sorts of
normal practices where you can have the fixed location of the point
available in the drawing, or the survey database - and the software
recognises that data for all purposes but the Traverse Adjustment.
As I look at the Survey process as it is currently implemented - there are a
series of very powerful tools - but which require the user to follow a
specific process which is different from anything they are used to, and
which probably goes beyond the theoretical understanding of many people
doing survey work. I have not made time to fully study the documentation,
so can't comment on it's adequacy.
The Survey data does not allow users to use the conventional AutoCAD
processes to "edit by drafting tools" and this has caused a lot of angst to
be reported in the newsgroup. Whether Autodesk will continue with their
"Survey System premise" that survey data is 'sacrosanct' and should only be
changed with the specific tools for that purpose, or will give into the
users who don't wish to learn the new system will be interesting to see.
One solution may be to give the Surveyor a password lock on the survey
database, but I suspect a better one is the long term education of who is
responsible for data and who can change it.
One thing which is obvious is that few of the posters on Survey have
investigated it's system design in detail, then offered constructive ideas
on how it can be improved. One clear exception is Sinc's posts on handling
cadastral data and labelling for parcels.
I've attached a practice fieldbook file prepared by Autodesk many years ago
and renamed by me to clarify its purpose. This file has only one NEZ line
in it and I was able to do a Least Squares Network adjustment with it. In
addition, you will have the Tutorial fieldbook "Survey-1.fbk" in the
C:\Program Files\AutoCAD Civil 3D 2008\Help\Civil 3D Tutorials directory for
practicing.

After importing the field book file (.fbk), I created a new traverse by
specifying the initial station, initial backsite, station numbers and final
foresite. When I attempted to adjust the traverse I was presented with a
dialog box stating "Error: First Occupied Point does not have known coords."
I have tried different configurations of the traverse and have even tried a
new traverse using randomly created points, but each attempt resulted in the
same error message. What am I doing wrong?
From the lack of previous posts about traverses and from the sparse
documentation within the knowledge base (a search of "traverse" yielded
nothing at all), I am beginning to think there are very few surveyors that
are using Civil3D for their calculations.
