Tool Palettes that will update Automatically???

I have made the custon tool palettes and need to know if there is anyway that you can get the tool palettes to update automatically, wile being on multiple users machines. It would be great if this can be loaded and updated automatically when there is a change. Does anyone know if this can be done???

I am using AutoCAD Civil 3D 2008

Thanks,
Jason

If you store the palettes on your network and then
point each user's palette path to that folder, any change you make to them will
be reflected the next time the user starts AutoCAD.

Note: Make the tp files read only or you will be
chasing your tail to keep track of user modifications

Yes, definitely do that.  You'll be sorry if
you don't.

Sure you can point to a network location and a local location but... If you have a tool Palette with groups on the network good luck adding and editing groups. You will have to copy out the aws file each time unless I'm doing something wrong. Then if they choose another profile how are you going to know where to copy that aws file. Network tool palettes just plain stink if you ask me, unless you do not need groups.

Getting palette groups to be shared is a pain,
you're right, but personally I fell that getting those tools shared is priority
number one and the groups are number two.  If you don't use the network
palettes you still need to copy them around to all the computers AND the aws
file.  At least if you use the network palettes the only file you have to
copy is that one small file.

I'm not too worried about if the groups get shared;
the users can administer their own groups as they see fit.  At least the
palettes are there for them to choose from and they are updated when I make a
change to them.

We have our palettes on a locked drive on the network that only i have access to. We originally had palette groups for each client but you're right they only work locally. Now, inside the locked drive we break down the client palettes by folder (keep them separate). On all client palettes, we have a "standard" tab that has the common stuff like creating new files from template, adding layouts from templates, load layers etc. at the bottom we have about 10 command tools that change the *toolpalettepath sys var to the any of our clients.

Let me know if you have questions or would like screenshots b/c i'm not very good at explaining things.
I truly believe this is the way to go.

Randy:

Can you provide a few screenshots, as I am interested in seeing how you have
your tool palettes setup. We also work with multiple clients and have over a
dozen different tool palette categories. It has been a challenge to get the
tool palettes updated from the network when new categories or groups are
added. Your screen shots would be helpful.

Thanks

If you start adding groups you are going to have a hard time. You can add the path to options > files > tool Palettes File location but the only way you can add groups is to copy the aws file over to each users profile which is located at
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Autodesk\C3D 2009\enu\Support\Profiles\Unnamed Profile\Profile.aws
And thats only if they are using the "Unnamed Profile" which is why I hate the way they have it set up. If a users creates a new profile - which most experienced users will - you have no way of knowing what they called it and there for can not copy your company standard aws file over so they can use it. You can try to get your users to do it themselves but if you have a large group only half (if you're lucky) will actually copy it over right to their profile. Sorry if this doesn't make much sense, search google for aws file and you can see how it all works and what a pain it is trying to take care of the not so savoy users.

here is 1 of 2 screen shots.

FYI:

I don't need to create profiles (.arg files) for each user to load everytime they want to switch between client palettes. When we have a new user I send them an email asking them to add my network lisp folder to their support files and change the the tool palette path. (this only has to be done once and then they can toggle between client palettes from the standard tab (as shown).

I think what kdepfyffer is trying to say about the aws file is that it difficult to control how the palettes appear on users machines (especially the order of tools) this is because the aws file is stored on each users machine. I agree, there should be a support path that can change that to a local drive.

The order problem is caused because tools will initially display chronologically (in order that they were created). To eliminate this, after a revision to your palettes or before you "go live", hit ctrl-A to select all tools > cut > and then repaste them in. Do this for every palette tab and then they will appear as they do on your screen. (except size, it always defaults to larger icons).

I noticed that you said you had layers load with the palettes. I'm trying to figure out how to get a bunch of different layers to load with clicking just one button for each palette. I have my palettes set up for things such as Lighting, Power, Fire Alarm...etc. I want to know how to get it so all of my layers for each palette will load automatically or with the press of a button. Anyone have any ideas?
