To Bind or Not to Bind! Units? Xrefs? Explode? - Civil 3D 2008 SP2

I still can't bind and explode my xrefs. There's always some struggle to get anything to bind and explode in 2008. I must bind my xref because there is some crazy coordinate bug. What happens is that the coordinates of the site were originally in the 11,000,000,6,000,000 (x,y). Then one day the coordinates start reporting in the hundreds. Nothing was moved. What's crazy is that I attach this problem file to another xref that is reporting the correct coordinates and it overlays my site perfectly, but not xrefing the other way around!

So I've fixed these coordinate file problems in the past by starting a fresh new template file, bind the offending file, and wahlah, the coordinates are back to normal for the rest of the project. This seems to work best when there aren't many "intelligent" objects in the drawing. This particular xref started exhibiting the coordinate problem after most of the design has been done and now there are many "intelligent" objects. I can bind-insert just fine, but when I explode the resulting block, my machine just locks up. I got on a faster machine with more memory and was able to see it attempting to recalculate my grading objects before it locked up, so I know it's the more complex "intelligent" objects that are hanging it up the explode block command. Why?

Such a simple operation as bind and explode should not be so complicated. Of course I have so many "intelligent" objects built off of other "intelligent" objects that everything (surfaces, grading groups, sites, etc.) would break if I were to copy-paste them or do a LandXML export-import for the dynamic objects and copied over the manual drafting. It's always this way on every project. I get wrapped around the axle of using "intelligent" dynamic objects, like Civil 3D marketing says I'm supposed to. Instead I'm just building ever higher platforms of complexity that crescendo into one great big CRASH the day before the project is due to the client. I grow weary of Civil 3D.

PS- Tried attaching the trouble file, but the forum just gives me the message "The content type of the file 'file.dwg' is not allowed." So much for help with DWGs. Hope it's temporary system glitch.

On the marketing thing, I had a client ask for a dynamic subdivision model.
They wanted to shift streets and pads and see things resolve.
I asked them why they believed it could be done.
I've still not seen anything actually accomplished that is near the hype Adesk is generating.
Its either stability or bugs that get you when you make lots of objects.
So the ideas are good, but we are only through about 20% of the development curve if you ask me.
I would do what you can with C3D, but minimize the dynamic stuff as you move along.
Of course, this is in exact opposition to the goal of a dynamic model, just like turning off all modeless palettes is in
exact opposition to the UI improvements of 2009 - but it must be done to get decent performance.
It seems to me that Adesk cannot introduce new core AutoCad features correctly anymore.
The C3D team seems to be doing great though, just a lot to do and dynamic stuff is not easy.

Does Autodesk issue service packs on
the release you are using? not likely.

Thank you Jeff! OK so I'm a UCS newbie and was trying to attach the xrefs with UCS set to something other than world. You're suggestion saved me a lot of time, and I don't even have to bind to my template file to get back to a UCS of world! How embarassing. Thanks again.

I tell users not to use the xref command to attach (overlay) xrefs.
Find a tool that pulls in mutiple xrefs according to standard settings.
email me if you don't find one, there are lots out there.
