surface definition symbol

Does anyone know the technical answer for what the symbol means in the attached picture?

I'm pretty sure that it signifies that the objects in that particular surface edit are no longer in the drawing, but I was looking for an official explanation in the Autodesk help file and couldn't find it.

universal "Not" symbol

 

as in Not valid,

Yes no longer in the drawing or being referenced by it
