surface boundary

Does the surface boundary have to be a 3dpoly.

Does Civil 3d have convert 3d poly from 2d poly.

Is there a way to take a 2d poly and have it sit on the surface so it turn into a 3d Poly.

Ok that's just not fair. You're basking in sunlight in paradise while I'm
getting drenched. 🙂

I use 2d polys for surface boundaries with good results. I have noticed in previous versions that I get the best results if I add the boundary to a serface after all other data has been added. I'm not sure why. I haven't tried it in ver. 2006 yet.

I haven't found a way in civil 3d to convert a 2d polyline to a 3d poly.

For instructions on projecting an object onto a surface try this link:

A surface boundary can be formed from both LWpolyline and 3Dpoly.

Civil 3D does not convert 3d poly from a 2d poly.

There is a way to drape a 3d poly on a surface, but it takes a few steps.
1. Create the 2dpoly
2. Convert it into a Grading Feature Line
3. Select Grading -> Edit -> Elevations from Surface
4. Select the option to not include intermediate grade breaks
5. Explode the resulting feature line - you will get a 3d poly with the
elevations from the surface. This could then be used as a surface boundary.

Speaking of surface boundaries - it would really be nice if we could
automatically include the outside boundary of a corridor surface as a hide
boundary for a non-corridor surface, so that as the corridor surface
changes, so too does the boundary for the non-corridor surface. This would
make visualization much easier. Currently, all of the corridor surface
boundaries must be exported to 3d polylines, closed, and then added to the
surface in order to truly combine the appearance of two surfaces. Then,
when a corridor changes, the old boundary must be removed, and a new
boundary must be constructed and added to the non-corridor surface.
