Stablity Issues Anyone? 2011

We have recently begun to use Civil 3D 2011 and Autocad 2011. We are using Dell Precision T3400's with 4 gigs of RAM, (even if you can only use 2 with CAD) 32 bit machines with XP. Our CAD packages are deplyed on the server so there are no stand alone machines. Since starting with 2011 we are getting a lot of the ever populare "Fatal Error" messages. Sometimes it even blesses us with no error message, it just goes away. Not recovery possible. I have looked for a service pack and of course, it's much to early to fix anything yet, right?

Is anyone else having these problems? I'm just wondering because we can always got back to 2009. We found 2010 to be pretty unstable also. Maybe it's something we're doing but I sure wish we could find out what it is if this is the case so we can stop it, whatever it is.

Help!

We are running 2011 on Dell T3400's with 4 GB's of RAM as well. While I have noticed a couple of occasions when I have crashed unexpectedly, most of our experience has been towards greater stability than in 2010, especially with regards to grading and feature lines. Out of curiosity, have you done the 3 gig switch that allows you to allocate more than 2 GB's to a program? That might help dramatically...

When I first used 2011 on a 2010 grading project that was troublesome, I
found 2011 to be much more stable as far as grading. I was able to work for
over 3 hours without a crash vs. a crash every 15-30 min in 2010. However
over time I have encountered stability issues again. Also I have yet to have
a recovery file that was recoverable. So far my verdict is "better but not
good" as far as stability with gradings.

Andy, how do you do this, exactly?

You mean is was installed from a network deployment?
The only difference between a "network licensed" version and a
"standalone" is the location of the license file.
Both are installed to and run from a local PC.

In my experience, C3D is more stable on Win-7-64-bit, than on XP.

I am convinced it's the operating systems. I am running C3D 2011 on Vista 64-bit and on another computer with XP 64-bit with very few problems. We are going to start testing Win 7 64-bit soon.

I personally, will not run 2010 or 2011 unless it's on a 64-bit OS.

I am having trouble with various features in Civil 3d 2011 crashing while setting up templates.
My laptop is an HP 8540W, Win 7 32bit, NVidia Quaddro 1gig 880m video.
Specifically issue is related to VIEWPORT SCALE in paper space.
System basically locks up until I hit escape.

Can anyone explain to me how to create custom viewport scale without crashing civil 3d?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, we have stability issues! I have an average of about 5 crashes per day. Usually, when I try to manipulate cogo points, but it happens while doing other random things, as well. Another machine in our office crashes when you hover over the "hatch" button, among other things. We generally did not have problems with 2010, but 2011 has been extremely difficult to work with.

I've had problems with several different files: consistent crashing when switching to paper space.

The following have seemd to help, but not eliminate, this problem:

  • Purging unnecessary blocks, especially "garbage" blocks that were the result of exploding complex blocks.
  • Making sure that all viewport scales used in paperspace are on the vp scale list
  • (Possibly) having ANNOALLVISIBLE set to 0
  • Getting a clean exit from AutoCAD
  • Luck
