True, but if you're not a "super user" chances are that you don't have the
GE Extension installed in the first place. You make a good point that we
could have made a warning in the installer that would have checked for the
Technology Preview, but I didn't hold the Service Pack up while that was
added.

If you have Civil 3D 2007 the only version that you should be running is
Service Pack 2.

Scott,
The readme says you need new templates (which still aren't available). Could that have been what caused your crash? It is a pipe related issue, right? I'm not saying that should have made your menus go away though...

Everyone else,
FWIW, I've installed sp2, and I have never been happier with Civil. I'll say it big, just like the op: I'VE INSTALLED SP2 AND I'VE NEVER BEEN HAPPIER (with Civil 3D)!!!

SP2 IS AWESOME! EVERYONE SHOULD INSTALL IT!!

BUT READ THE README FIRST!!!!

For the record... I uninstalled Google Earth Extention and it still crashed C3D upon opening. Civil 3D is a fantabulous product that makes my life easier. Everyone... Please install SP2!!! 😛

Maybe I shouldn't have said, "Don't Install SP2". Maybe I should have said, “Don’t Install SP2 until you are totally clear on what to do, uninstall this, check that, stand on one foot, jump through these hoops, pat your tummy, etc…”. Maybe AutoDesk should have been clearer? Who decides?

Dickey... I can read, ergo this post.
Seems to me that you and Rick need a shoulder to cry on & I'm here for you two ladies. I’ll go and get some cheese for your whines & you can let it all out.
*Me pats your backs and mumbles “There… There… it’ll be ok.”*

It’s your opinion that SP2 is the greatest of them all. I disagree. I prefer SP1a that got us out of the glitch / crash modes. Without SP1a there would not be a SP2.

By the way, when can I pick up my trophy?

Nope, I started from scratch, blank template, no styles (except Standard)...

Jason,

I know you and I have gone 'round about' on issues before, but I don't think
you understand the frustration of trying to get this stuff to work in a
production environment. I would say most users install their software
themselves, and don't have a lot of time away from chargeability to make it
work. This software was introduced as Civil3D 2004 for cryin' out loud. And
has been touted as workable in every version so far until we actually try
it, and then it gets renamed "A Work in Progress". We don't have the time
that dealers and trainers have to play and find workarounds. It should work.
Period.

Now that being said, maybe we can go at it from a different direction. What
still doesn't work even with SP2? What commands destroy whole projects and
cause us to abandon the effort for LDT? I'm really the through with the
"This SP really works" claim. None so far have.

Many people would be happy with the Beta state of this software if they just
knew up fornt that comand A,B or C will cause total corruption of the
database so stay away until it is fixed. We aren't Beta testers. We are
trying to make money in a mine field.

You have to admit that many times you have claimed that it works fine for
you. Why do we need SP's if all the versions so far work fine?

Tim

Incredible job there, Jerm. You've succeeded in spreading fear,
uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) just because you can't read. This has
been posted so many times that my head hurts just thinking about it.

Thanks for telling everyone not to install SP2. You are incredibly
wise. Those of us who had already installed it and are working really
well with it could have been really stuck when we weren't able to use
the program and our productivity ceased. I am simply amazed that
you've found a reason to shoot down one of the best service packs that
I've seen...especially when so many of us are actually USING the
software with the service pack installed.

Congratulations - I award this the "warning of the year" trophy.

You don't think I understand the frustration? How about leaving a job
as a CAD manager for a 200+ person firm? How's that for frustration?

If you are smart enough to install your own software, then you should be
smart enough to read the readme file that came along with it. Those
nicely typed words aren't there just for show, they actually convey
information. If people can follow instructions, then their headaches
will be much fewer and farther in between.

Have you installed it? Are you using it? If not, stop complaining.
If so, then let us know what areas you're having issues with, and
you'll either get help or a confirmation that you can't do what you're
wanting to do. It's as simple as that.

> Many people would be happy with the Beta state of this software if they just

Then stick with what you know. Is Autodesk actually at your office
right now forcing you to use Civil 3D?

> You have to admit that many times you have claimed that it works fine for

The issues that I state that work for me simply DO. If something doesn't
work, then I'm very quick to discuss it True, there are unstable areas
of the program (grading sound familiar?), and I don't work much with
that. The areas that I've had success, though, simply work. I look at
overall project enhancement, not just one or two little areas that annoy me.

Here's a question - are you really using Civil 3D in production, or have
you just installed it and played with it for a while? As I said, if
you've got it in production and are having problems, document them.
Let people know. The good thing about this newsgroup is those people
who "Just have time to sit and play with the software" are finding
workarounds and fixes free of charge to users. Amazingly enough,
people like you still don't appreciate what's being done. If you don't
like it, don't use it. Simple. But don't stand in the way of those
of us who CAN make it work.

Sorry, I am inclined to agree with Tim. If Civil3D did not have the Autodesk name behind it, it would have been bounced out of our office along time ago. Instead we persevere pressured by standardisation issues and huge knowledge and training investment and driven a bit by hope as well. The Civil 2007 release was a slap in the face. My computer days started on UNIX machines which ran 24hour shifts and crashed once a year, if that. When I tried to implement Civil3D 2007 it crashed 5-10 times a day. Rolling back to 2006 left a trail of problems as well. It would have been far better to release 2007 only now with SP2 included.

I have been working with AutoCAD since version 5.0, pleased once with the new feature one did not have to leave the graphics editor anymore to save the drawing, and new commands such as DXFIN and DXFOUT. Functionality has improved tremendously since, and Autodesk has recorded remarkable achievements. I have hardly any issues with AutoCAD itself, I think it is the best CAD environment there is and this keeps me going. This does not give Autodesk the right to hand us such a crash happy release for Civil3D. If we treated our clients like Autodesk treats us we would be sitting hats in hand on the pavement.

The readme with SP2 states that the GE extension v1.0 will be disabled. It is misleading. The whole Civil3D installation gets disabled. Of course some users will fall into this trap, because they simply don’t expect Autodesk to produce this sort of fatal issue in the first place. And they get upset because it costs them money. And Autodesk needs to know this AND TAKE IT ON BOARD.

Arguments such as "If you don't like it leave it" are just inane and contribute nothing. It’s not that simple.

This is my last argument - and it's not misleading at all. The
highlighting is mine, and mine alone. You can find it original at
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=8021641&linkID=3549304

Any questions? I'd like to find out where the trap is. If there was
one, there was certainly a neon sign pointing to it.

Was this there from the start, or was it added later? Would it have hurt to put that statement in the Readme?

Hans, Jason, and others...

The BOLD notice about having to uninstall GEE was added later, on 07SEP
(as I mentioned in an earlier post in this thread, which was incorectly
refuted as quoted below)

and that is why we put that statement
on the download load page when we
posted the Service Pack.

Not true, the notice was added on 07SEP.

The original SP2 page as posted on 01SEP can be found here:
