Sorry. Another Vault question.

You all must be sick of these question by now but
here I go.

I am ready to pull the trigger on Vault but I am
not really sure if it's worth it. I have read through many of the post here and
have read an Implementation Guide ( I think from Inventor). We do not
collaborate with any other offices. No web server, MS Exchange. Our LAN is
a one trick pony. All in house, I occasionally connect with a VPN. Rarely do we
need to have more than one person working on a project ( although that might
change if the functionality was there).
I have 6
CAD seats so no major SQL upgrade. That's good. We do small private sector work
(site plans, subdivisions, etc.)

Please, if you are using Vault, let me know what is
doing for you. How easy/hard it was to get the users on board. Does the
Vault effect or mange your LDT projects? If you chose not to use the
Vault, please let me know why you did so.

Thanks,

John

We are using vault because it appears to be the ONLY choice for splitting up data to different drawings (I've commented elsewhere on why data shortcuts won't cut it). Even though we are a very small company, we still deal with projects that are hundreds of acres. So having all the data on one drawing that ends up being 50-100 MB doesn't sound real appealing. Jury's still out whether we actually LIKE vault or not, but it seems like we have no choice as we move to 2007.

I think something we all need to keep in mind is that Vault is NOT new. It's
been around for five versions on the mechanical side, and is being rolled to
all branches of the Autodesk product line as the project/document management
tool of choice.

It's hard for us to simply accept because it is a disruptive change in work
habits for most CEs, but a large number of MEs have been using it for years
and wouldn't go back. I think once a few folks have gotten in and we have
some real questions instead of FUD, we'll all be better informed about the
realities. I saw one above, and more are sure to follow.

A few things come to mind.
How do you archive a project that has used Vault?
How do you restore a project from archive that has used Vault?
So as a part of the dreaded discovery process you are required to turn over all electronic files relating to the project.
What do you do with the Vault data?
Does Vault track .bak files?
What do you do about Land desktop projects?
Sorry 'bout doing this in public but the more I learn, the more questions arise.

Kevin,

I have read your post and many of the other Vault posts here trying to get a
hand on this thing.

Thanks for the input.

What exactly is Vault? We are an office of 2 people, have 2 licenses, but i am the only one that does any design. Is this something i need to learn or use?

James,

You are correct. Most people don't like change. I had about 30 complaints
form 4 users yesterday when I rolled out LDT 2007...but I am more than
willing to roll this thing out if it helps us. The extra work needs
justification from the powers that be. I need some billable time soon. I
have seen some of the posts here that document the challenges with data
shortcuts so there's a huge benefit in being able to share data efficiently.
I am assuming this is all Civil 3D objects including points, alignments,
profiles, surfaces, sites, labels, etc. I have seen the backup
options/features. I already have a great backup. Now I have to figure out
how to get Backup Exec to run a script before and after my daily BU job to
get the Vault backed up?

I have read a lot of information on the Vault yesterday & today and have
been browsing the Vault NG but I still have a ton of questions. Many of them
were posted below by John P. I am just trying to learn what Vault can do for
us and trying to get a hand on how to actually use it.

Now back to, "Managing Your Data for Autodesk Civil 3D" (an intriguing
publication).

Based on my very limited knowledge. If you are a one-person design team,
this might not be for you.

Let the people who know what there talking about correct me if I am wrong.

Been reading alot today myself.
This is way more complicated than I feared.
The bell on the dollar sign pump just won't quit ringing.
I swear to God it would be cheaper to switch to MicroStation.
All I would have to teach them to do is draw differently.
Now I gotta teach 'em how to file differently and You can't even open a file the same way.
Goodness sake's alive am I going to be the busiest man on the planet for the next year.
John I envy you, you work in a small shop.
I get to deal with a hundred of um.
The least Dan and Dave can do is send flowers when I keel over in September.

Only 6 seats to setup. I couldn't handle dealing with 100 shiny-happy cadies
when they first realize the things to come...

I'll send flowers as well.

It would still work for a one person "team." I personally have the
Vault Server set up on my laptop (localhost) and am using it to "spread
out the data" to more than one DWG file in a large design. This helps
to keep the file size down, thus improving performance. As a matter of
fact, I honestly think it'd be a better solution for one person that for
John P's 100+ users. BTW, I'll be sending flowers as well 😉
