Simple Render Question

I've used C3D for several years for roadway design but never got around to rendering anything, now I have a need.  Currently using C3D 2011.

When I try to assign a pre-defined Render Material to a surface via the Surface Properties Information tab no rendering occurs.  There are several (looks like Autodesk stock) rendering materials but nothing seems to happen when I select them, the surface does not change it's appearance to rendered.

What could it be?

Do you have your view style set to one that shows materials (i.e. Realistic)?

While you can display materials with view styles in C3D, "rendering" usually entails applying light and shadow settings and textures to produce photo realistic views of the models, so it is a more involved process. Is that what you are after?
