Sheet Manager

I have finally finished my first project in C3D. I am now trying to figure out the sheet manager. What I am trying to do is to have Sheet Manager automatically number my sheets.

I have searched the web and looked at the sample drawings that ship with C3D but have not been able to find anything helpful in figuring out how to do this.

If anyone could help with this, it would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Glen

Are all the sheets in a Sheet Set? From there, you can assign a number.
Then, add an Mtext object, and insert a Field referencing the Sheet Number.

What I presently have is my project with boarders. The borders have attributes (drawn by, date, title, page, etc.) that we have always used in the past. The sheet set is created and works fine. I can plot everything perfectly. I am just unfamilar with how to get SSM to take care of those attributes.

you do not use attributes with the sheet set..... you will now need to learn
FIELDS and some simple diesel functions depending on your approach to the
sheet set manager..

I have my title block set up as a block filled with several attributes. The default values for the attributes are fields set to the appropriate sheet/sheet set info I want to retrieve. I've also added several custom sheet set values in a template sheet set.

I was unaware that you could use fields within an attribute definition. What
benefit does this provide you compared to using fields in m-text? I have
also set up custom values in sheet set templates. I am always looking for a
more streamlined approach for the sheet set...Autodesk has left much
desired, still better than 'plot.

I store my title blocks as, well, blocks. An MText field within a block didn't update so I put the field as the default for an attribute. Now it updates on and 'open', 'redraw', 'plot', and so on. Once a layout is added to a sheet set its title block gets fully populated with the correct information. If for some reason I need to over-ride some information coming from the sheet set its as simple as editing the attribute and overwriting the field with whatever I want. Updating an older drawing is easy too, just replace the title block block with the new SSM title block.

For your custom sheet set fields, you can preemptively put them in your
Titleblock attributes. When the layout is added to your sheet set, the
custom field will react just as it should as long as the field name
matches exactly. I have a custom field in our Titleblock called "Sheet
Total" that stays as ### until it is added to a sheet set with that
custom field name.

Mark,

Ever use GATTE? I've found a way to replace attributes globally in a
drawing with fields. It's useful if you have a bunch of BLOCKS in a
drawing over several layouts that need fields to be overridden.

If you haven't discovered it yet:
1. Select a field inside the Field Dialog Box.
2. In the "Field Expression" box at the bottom of the dialog, highlight
the entire field expression string.
3. Use GATTE, pick an attribute to replace, and paste the field
expression to the command line when prompted for text to replace with.

I'm sure there are many other uses for this field expression, but this
is the only one I've used so far.

I haven't used GATTE before. I'll check it out when I get a chance.

Have you used BATTMAN? It puts the block attributes in an editing order.

I have the exact same "Sheet total" custom attribute. My SSM title block has about 17 attributes within, 14 of them contain fields and 10 of those are custom fields. All of the templates/layouts that are destined to become part of a multi-sheet project have this SSM title block already in there. Once the sheets get added to the sheet set manager their title block fields get populated. After all the sheets are added and a few more 'clicks', it produces a nice sheet index on my cover sheet.

I have my title blocks and templates setup just like this. Here is a vba program that someone on this site sent me a long time ago that will total the sheets for you and fill it out in the custom properties. Just load and run, it will fill the total sheets out for you.

Hey, cool! No more picking in the order I want them to show up! How
long has that been around? Come to think of it, I remember hearing
about a BATTMAN around 2004.

So if it was originally defined as a WBLOCK, how do you redefine the
order in the source file?

Thanks Terryl. I'm not sure what to do with the VBA (still an ACAD newbie) but I'll download and save it for later use. I do have a question about it though, can it tally the sheets in a given sheet set subset or does it tally ALL the sheets in a given sheet set? Most of my sheet sets have a main set and then a subset of two more sheets. The main sheet set doesn't include the subset in its sheet number total.

It will total for the whole sheet set, I don't know if it can be modified to do just she sub sets or not. Maybe someone on here with more programing will know. My sheet sets have anywhere from 3 to 10 subsets in them, but we put the total number of sheets in the set on are sheets.

I have all of my typical/misc sheet component items defined as blocks within a my standard sheet component source drawing. (stuff like north arrows, title blocks, revision blocks, graphic scales, etc) I use BATTMAN in that drawing to set the order. Then I drag the items to my Sheet Component tool pallet and use them from there.

... ya know, I don't think I've ever used Wblock before ...
