Selecting boundary surfaces for materials in material list

When I'm creating a material list, every time I select two surfaces and one is smaller than the other, a vertical boundary is created rather than a boundary with the shape of exactly the space between those two surfaces. How can I avoid this? Any help? Please see attached image.

Thanks.

This is normal and expected behaviour.  I don't understand what you mean by "exacly the space between the surfaces."  If one surface is smaller than the other then there's no data to compare, so the program uses the vertical boundary.

I believe that the problem shown in your picture could be fixed by using subcriteria, but without a sample drawing to experiment with I can't be sure.
