Section Views - Different Scales

I've got a problem with 2 drawings that I'm working on. This is using Civil 3D 2010. I'll explain best I can.

I have 1 profile and 3 sections. The profile is to go on it's own drawing, the 3 sections to go on another drawing.

The profile is to be shown at a scale of 1:250, the sections at 1:100.

I set my viewports up with these scales and inserted the xref with the profile and sections on it.

Both the profile and sections scale properly however the position of the text is way off.

It seems that changing the scale of my xref in model space is causing problems. If I go into my xref and in model space set the annotative scale to 1to100 the sections show fine in my drawing, however if I set it to 1to250, save it and go back to my drawing I get the text problem. I don't touch the scale in my drawing where I've xreffed in the sections. This is always set to 1:100.

Anyone know how to fix this without having to change my xref's annotative scale all the time?

Is there a reason you have to xref them in, instead of having them resident?

You could erase all the labels in the source drawing and after you're xref-ing the sections or profile in your new drawing you can label them in there. C3D has the capability to label profiles, pipes, profile views, etc. from xref, you know?

As you have found, I ran into the same problem when there is a need for differing scales within the same drawing. My drawing workflow changed drasticaly when I moved from LDT to Civil 3D. I used to get by with 2-3 drawing files for a typical project and now have several more as needed. Because cross section are typically plotted with a different scale factor than most other data I recommend creating the cross sections from data references in a file of its own. You can then set the appropriate drawing scale without affecting other data.

This is the best answer that I know of. Seems to be a bug or something.

Yeah, that looks like the best way forward, but it does feel like it is a bug. Everything else scaled as it should have done, it just placed the text in the wrong place. I'll look into data shortcuts for future projects, although am I right in thinking I would need to create shortcuts for all information I want in my drawing (existing surface, alignment I want sections on, corridor I want shown)?

Also, the reason I had it all x-reffed in the first place was because it was the quickest method and I stupidly thought Civil 3D would do what it was meant to do with annotative scaling 😉

Yes you will need shortcuts for each. And the cool thing is they are super-easy to create and work with. One key thing when working with shortcuts (same goes for xrefs) is to have a good data management process. And document the procedures if you have a lot of users. In addition to the help files, there are some good post's here in the forum describing different methods of how project data is organized.

Happy C3D'ing !
