Scale List

I am in the process of testing Civil 3D 2012 and when I use "scalelistedit" to reset my annotation scale list, I am only getting architectural scales like 1/4" = 1'-0". My drawing units are set to feet. When I reset my annotation scale list in 2011 I am getting scales like 1" = 20' which is what I want.

Is there a new setting or command in 2012 that I should be using?

Thanks,

Andy

AECDWGSETUP can give you the option to change it. Type it in command line and then go into Units. Set them to Feet.

Thanks for the quick reply. When I use AECDWGSETUP, the units are already set to feet.

I am getting the same results with Civil 3D 2012 as you. Smiley Mad Civil 3D 2011 does change it to Feet and removes architectural scales. Let me play with it little more and see what is going on with 2012.

Hi aluster-

When prompted to select Imperial, Metric, or both, try selecting both (Metric and Imperial Scales). You should get most of your engineering scales back when you do this.

Hope this helps!

Thanks. It looks like metric will work for my engineering scales. It just seems a little weird having to select metric.

Glad to help, and just to let you know Development is aware of this, and currently looking into the issue.

If you use "scalelistedit" command, a dialog box should showup "EDIT DRAWING SCALES" Click Add, add scale window shows up. Under scale name: Type 1/4" = 1' (which is 1 paper inch = 48 drawing feet0 Under scale properties enter 1 and 48. That should be it. In the event that you have all actectural. Hit Reset. You can add scale as above. I hope this works.

Same here.  I've got a script i've been running for the last 3 years that resets the anno scales to decimals and in 2012 it defaults to Arch Annotation Scales...  Does anyone use Arch scales and units in Civil projects???  Out of the box does Revit default to decimal feet???

The fix above (selecting metric) wasn't working for me.  I always guessed it was pulling the scale lists from HKLM into HKCU when you tried to reset the default list, but I'm not sure - I tried adding test entries in the many scale lists in HKLM and it never pulled them through.  My workaround at present (because I didn't want to have to enter all these more than once) was just to create a registry key.

If you are using C3d 2012, you can download and double click/add the file to your registry, should replace your present entries with the engineering scales.  Just keep the file handy and double click it instead of resetting the default list if you ever need to - can always reset your drawing scales using this.

When starting new drawing, even using the NCS Imperial template, that the list of scales I received was wrong (arch).  I found that the profile controls the list of scales used by the annotation scale list Reset.  If you edit the scales in the Options, User Settings , Default Scales, this is the location that annotation scales pull from.  This also sets the scales in the registry

C3D2014 = HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\AutoCAD\R19.1\ACAD-D000:409\Scale List

I have edited this list in case that is needed for users and exported out a reg file.

But if you pick reset scales from the user settings in the options, this pulls from some other location that I don't know.  This reset in Options, User Settings , Default Scales, Reset defaults to resetting with Architectural scales.  If you get this you need to edit that list or reapply the reg key.  The AECDWGSETUP reset also pulls from the unknown location and will result in resetting the profile to use the Arch scales.

Hope this helps someone.  I tried to explain this to our support and received "If the drawing you have open has the scales you want, why would you ever want to reset the scales?"  Valid question, but if some user does hit the reset from wrong location, the program will only hand out the architectural list.  Knowing why or fixing the problem is half the battle in support.  Now if Autodesk would only address the issue in a Hotfix for release 2012-2014...

The real "problem" is when you have 70+ engineers and CAD techs working in Civil 3D 2012, and they all have set their own Imperial scale list. Then if the scales for annotated text do not match their scale list set for a view port, the text is not displayed in that viewport. I understand that my drawinng units are set to (feet) and I then can set to (Metric) scale list and have the engineering scales that I use every day. 1:50 metric, as opposed to 1"=50' Imperial (Civil scale). Basically AutoDesk it wanting everyone to change the definition of Metric and Imperial. The communication of the glossary of terms for Civil 3D sould read "Metric- only metric if Units are set to Metric" That's not confusing. Thanks for the Solution to the problem!!!

If possible, I'd like to bump the development team on this.  It's been over 3 years now, so I would guess that this problem was set aside.

Thanks.

This issue appeared in a drawing from another firm today. Please add my vote to getting this issue resolved.

Have they fixed this?

I have had 2015 installed for months now, and was sure that they kicked the can down the road, but it apears you have to define 'fixed'.  They have modified the registry setting for Metric and Imperial to show Imperial Enginnering scales.  The problem with that is when the default scale list is modified in the Options dialog, then someone picks the reset scales button, you loose all the Imperial Engineering Scales.

The location of that list is here (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\AutoCAD\R20.0\ACAD-E000:409\Scale List)

I had a screencast recorded but not saved showing that it was working for the most part, but forgot to save the video.  I just wish I would have backed up that reg branch prior to testing this, becuase there is no way to get those keys back after it gets jacked up.  Someone else could verify this location and see if you have Architectural Imperial scales listed above the metric list or Engineering Scales.  If Engineering scales, make sure you export out that branch for future reference if you need it.

It's been awhile since I researched this, but I believe the "unknown" location is the drawing that autocad opens by default. if the template autocad opens for the initial blank dwg contains architectural scales, it may use those instead of the imperial engineering scales on a reset.  I forget where I discovered that, but ever since I changed the default template AutoCAD uses for the initial drawing I have not had the issue.  The fun part comes when clients like WISDOT decide they want their own list :(.

The scale list in the registry and the scale list in your default open template need to be identical in order to see consistent behavior.

On a side note, and people could certainly accuse me of being picky about this, metric scales are not the same as engineering scales in AutoCAD!!!

and if you need to use Architectural scales for whatever reason in a DWG with decimal units: see the pic.

for 6" = 1 FT, just put 6 in the paper inches and 1 in the Drawing Feet

I'm puzzled with 2015. I've been stating the scale list since 2011 by writing to the registry key with our standard scale with great success , but it's not happening in 2015. If I browse the keys the scales are there but the scale list was still architects, then I option reset defaults and now only have 1:1 and 1"=20, and reg key is still full of scales. What am I missing?
Thank you

have you checked the setting for the command measurement and/or the units set in aecdwginfo command in your templates and project drawings?  see the link below.
