Attached is a zip file with a standalone program to aid in cleaning up the Recent Documents list for all flavors of AutoCAD, 2009-2013.
It's pretty self explanatory, just be sure to run it with no sessions of AutoCAD, or vertical products, running. It should refuse to run if it sees any Acad.exe application in the running tasks list. Once the dialog opens it will show you all of the Autocad related products you have installed, select one and it will fill in the first list of recent documents. Then select a profile for that product and the second list will populate with the SSM related recent documents saved for that profile. You can then select any item from either list, if the same DST filename exists in both lists it will automatically select them both. Use the standard selection methods to select more than one (shift-click, control-click, window).
Be sure to Unblock, if needed, the zip file before extracting the exe file. (Check the file properties)

You just solved two problems for me.
thanks
You are a beautiful beautiful person and I could just kiss you! This program has just fixed the problem booting with SSM when I move .dst files, thank you!
Why you people go so far ...
Just a .reg works perfectly !
1. Open a new text document
2. Copy paste this:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\AutoCAD\R20.0\ACAD-8001:409\Recent File List\]
(If you use an older version of AutoCAD just change the version from R20.0 to R18.0 for example for version 2012. If you use AutoCAD MAP maybe you have to change just the folder name AutoCAD to AutoCAD MAP to clear all the history of recent file. I have tried this with AutoCAD 2015 and it works perfectly!)
3. Change the extension form .txt to .reg
4. Just say OK
P.S If you wanna clear the adobe Reader or Acrobat history of recent file same philosophy! Or just like a lawyer will say Mutatis mutandis ...
1. Copy paste this:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\11.0\AVGeneral\cRecentFiles]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\11.0\AVGeneral\cRecentFiles]
Older version or new version of Acrobat or Reader ?! Change the version from 11.0 to 10.0 for Acrobat X or Reader X

Why? Because we don't want to CLEAR the recent documents list. We only want the DST's removed from that list. It's also quite handy to selectively remove drawings opened from a network share that is no longer present....those items in the MRU list will slow down opening Autocad.

I would like to add my thanks to you for this tool also.
Unfortuntely, it just defies logic that we even have a need for such tools though.
Why can't Autodesk just FIX this?
Very well put @rkmcswain
That was over two and a half years ago. Now we have an IdeaStation. Maybe if we all work together we can prioritise the mindset of the developers to get some of the basic things fixed, including this one.
If anyone is willing to vote, the place is here.

How come you don't have this on the Exchange Apps store....
This app was written before the Exchange existed. It is on my list, however, to figure out how to get it on there. One drawback is that I thought all of the apps are supposed to run inside of AutoCAD. But this one requires AutoCAD to not be running at all. Glad you like it, Mike!
Thanks, Jeff! Just found this. Works great! (Civil 3D 2014 on Windows 8.1 Pro)
I click and nothing happens 🥴
