Quadro vs GeForce

After a few quick test, including opening 4 models (see attached) with
realistic shading & swing around on the 3d orbit...Quadro ain't worth the
money.

More to come, but I have a GeForce 9800GTX+ ($135) running Vista 64 with a
Quad2Core@3GHz & 4GB DDR2 & a Quadro FX1700 ($434) running on a Core i7 w/
6GB DDR3.

I experiance no noticible improvement with the Quadro. Both machines are a
bit slow witth the orbit commands.

There is an IINCREDIBLE improvement over a P4 @3.2GHz w/ 3GB DDR2 & a QUadro
FX 500/600 running Win XP.

Thats not even a fair comparison. The Quadro FX 600 is a legacy product and also Entry-Level. it only has a memory bandwith of 7.8gb/sec as opposed to the GeForce 9800GTX+ which has a memory bandwith of 70.4gb/sec.

The gaming cards seem to get updated constantly and are thus getting better and better, however the Quadro cards are designed with specific applications in mind like CAD and get updated less often.
That being said, i have a GeForce 9800GTX+ at home in a 3.0ghz/8gb RAM system and i'm not as impressed with it as i am with my work laptop which is a 2.53ghz/8gb RAM system with a Quadro FX 3700M.

Please don't laugh but that was my former hardware.
;)

There have been a few posts here from people
with similar specs. I thought that may help them better understand there is a
noticible difference between new and what is now relatively very old
hardware (approx. 4 yrs with ours).

I was much more supprised at the Core i7 &
FX1700 (a mid range CAD card) not outperfoming the Quad2Core with the Geforce. I
will be testing it more in the next few days but in the last two days there is
nothing to justfy the extra $300. They both run fine and stable so far. Which is
all we need. We don't do heavy rendering. We get a few jobs that require 3d
prentations but they are few and far between.

Thanks for the comparision with the FX 3800. It's
good to know that there is something better out there but the 3800 takes us to a
whole other level with an $800 price tag. I would not be taken seriously
asking for those video cards right now. 😉

Yeah the Quadro cards are very expensive compared to the GeForce so i understand why people don't want to spend the extra money for the little bit of improvement.

Do you have the autocad performance drivers installed for your Quadro card that you are testing with?

And if you do have the Performance drivers installed, John. Have you done a Manual Tune per the NVidia installation doc's?

Are you able to float the Layer Manager without any problems and can you use the Object viewer without it binding and crashing?

I was reluctant to install the 09 driver on 2010.
That was the reason for my "Performance Driver" post below.

I have not been using 2010 very much as I am
still trying to get these boxes configured & rolled out. I have
not seen any issue with the layer man yet. I keep it auto-hidden & it
does not seem to perform as poorly as it did on my XP box with 09.

I really don't use object viewer much.
I typically just have a shaded viewport always set with ushaded
VP's for plan & a third for profile. With that said, I have yet to have
a video card crash (which were VERY common with the old
hardware) & openeing those 5 dwg's above is pushing my machine well
past where I need it to go.

The newest driver downloads should contain the Performance drivers and C3D should recognize them. It worked for me on my last install. The 2010 drivers include the 2009 Performance drivers but I think that's only because they also support 2009.

As far as the debate with the Quadro card and GeForce card in this scenerio; is $300 really worth fussing about with the cost of the Core i7 system with 6GB of RAM? Seems more important to have a "proper" graphics card in the system when you are going to by the top notch hardware for the rest of the system.

And I will confirm with Allen that the latest certified drivers from Autodesk do indeed have the performance drivers installed with them for Civil3D 2009. There is no need to hack the install process.

What 2010 drivers are we referring to here? If we are talking about the nVidia performance drivers, i thought only 2009 was available and that they were only available for XP.
I tried the hack mentioned in the blog post above on Vista x64 and it was no dice. Gave me error messages about not having a high-end card and slowed things down.

As far as comparing the cards monetarily, I figure if you are going to buy a 8k seat of software, and pay someone 50k+ a year to use it, another thousand dollars or so shouldn't be a huge deal if it will increase their performance and productivity.

To be fair here, we are talking about the difference between an $800 card and a $130 card.

I have a GeForce 9600 GT with 1GB of RAM, on a Vista x64 system, and I have yet to find any reason why I would have wanted to increase the cost of my machine by another $700. The entire computer cost $2200 as it was (including operating system and a 22" LCD monitor), so adding almost $700 to that cost is quite significant for very little gain.

Exactly Sinc,
face=Arial>it would be the difference between $1350/box and $2000/box for a
noticible perfomance increase.

Also that $300*4PC's buys bupkis.
