Profile

I common format to annotate a profile, in our area, is for the elevation
values up the left side to be placed on the grid itself instead of outside
the grid. Is this possible?

Angel,

I assume that you are looking for "profile view" left axis annotation. If so
the current functionality lets you label them only outide the grid as you
noticed.

I would like to mention here that we (Civil3D team at Autodesk) noted down
the option (of ability to place the grid annotation as user wishes, like
other label) you mentioned as a requirement early on, but deferred for some
reasones.

Now as most of you have experimented with the product, I humbly ask your
input with respect to this functionality.

1. First and foremost do you think it is sufficient enough to add "X/Y
offesets" to major/minor text labels in "Profile View Styles"? This would
need a change in Axes Annotation tab.

OR

2. Secondly, since you have seen Civil3D label - would you like to see Axes
annotation (be it left/right or top/bottom axes) items as a potential label
items that you associate with a profile view object? This approach suggests
us to add few extra label types to our settings tree. (a) vertical axes
major increment label styles, (b) vertical axes minor increment label
styles, (c) hprizontal axes major increment label styles, (d) horizontal
axes minor increment label styles as a minimum. This also lets us define
vertical, horizontal axes title labe styles (say if ou want to place a datum
label at the bottom of left axes horizontally).

This approach might clean a lot of existing Profile View Style UI, but
whenever user creates a profile view object he/she will have to associate
that object with a "graph annotation label set" which comprises "a" label
style for each axis (if they wish), similar to alignment stationing.

AND/OR

3. If you have noticed horizontal axes annotation (ticks and station
values), they can also be placed as a "band" with border around it (or turn
off the border) and user can move it as he/she wishes, even to inside the
grid. Would you like to see "vertical axes annotation" too to have a similr
band styles? (LDT customers using sheet manager could relate this to
vertical frame on profile sheets).

Please note that any course of direction we take here would have similar
impact on "section views" too as they share infrastructure.

Finally, these may not be the only options, and we appreciate your input on
these or any other suggestions you have to improve our functionality and
interface so that it meets the needs of most customers.

Thanks for bringing out this isssue and looking forward for all of your
input.

Scenario 1 would be sufficient for what I described. But, the main problem
with styles, as many have already pointed out, is that they can be
restrictive. I can see that Scenarios 2 & 3 that you defined can be more
useful. My long term goal is to be able to easily show what locally we call
a three line profile. The thread "Call for Cul-de-Sac Examples" describes
the challenge well.

Suggestions:
1. I would like for the profile view to have space to the right (Before)
and Left (After) the Start and End stations of the alignment. Similar to the
number of grids above and below the profile. This could be labeled "Adjust
graph view length:". This would allow an appearance that is more like the
finished product.

2. I would like to be able to format the Stationing along the horizontal
axis of the Profile View similar to the Stationing for the alignment. This
would allow for station 1000 to be shown as 10+00 or just plain 10. The
Alignment Major Station Format allows for Station Character (+), Station
Character Position (10+00), and Output... "Left of Station Character" would
produce simply 10.

That is it for the moment.

Another profile item that is needed is the ability to format Vertical Curve Data labels individually for each vertical curve. Some times individual curve labels need to be offset differently to clear the line work.
