PROFILE VIEW - not linked to surface?

We have an alignment created across a surface via "create alignment from object," in this case a polyline.

Using the standard "create profile view," we hope to create a profile of this alignment across the surface topography.  In the "create profile view" routine, we find no opportunity to specifically link this alignment to our surface, but we follow the instructions carefully nonetheless.

We then get the result shown in the appended JPG.  Note that the topography involved is by NO means flat; what are we missing here?

Is the alignment simply unconnected with the surface?

How do we get the profile to reflect the surface over which the alignment is created?

Many thanks.

Create a Surface Profile and it will be displayed in the ProfileView

You simply created the Profile View, not the actual profile itself.

Home Tab-->Profile-->Create Surface Profile

Here, you can select your Alignment and Surface, and it will then create a Surface Profile, which you can then add to your Profile View.

Also, in that dialog box, you can choose 'Draw in Profile View' which will then set up the Profile View, as another method of doing it.
