plotting shaded surfaces

I've created a 3D surface for a sidewalk and curb ramps

then I put model space in an isometric view and invoked the "shaded" visual style,

in the plot viewport it looks shaded like I want (first attachment)

I set the plot viewport "shade plot" to "as displayed"

but the plot preview and the paper plot both come out with no shading (second attachment)

any suggestions?  am I missing a toggle somewhere?

The only suggestion I would have would be to check and make sure the shading is not on a No Plot layer.
