Plot styles .stb

Can someone list a set of complete steps to create a .stb plot style and apply it to a drawing. I think I sorta understand how to get the different appearances in each layout i am looking for through layer states. Can't I have a different layer state for each layout? But I need to know how to apply a plot style to a layer. Right now this is what I'm trying to do.

1) Create a .stb plot style with the different styles I want such as one for 50%, 75%, and so on.

2) I go to the layer manager and under plot style I select the style i want. but in my drawing it did not do want I was looking for. For instance I have a surface, and some parcels and I wanted everything except my surface to be as is in the layer manager and my surface to be screened. Instead of screening my surface it screened SOME of my parcel labels.

Is it a bylayer issue within your styles? Or possibly a rogue style with
components on layers other than those you intended?

I'd suggest possibly working out your scheme with normal line objects to
mitigate the chance for confusion with the Civil 3D objects. If a surface
layer is set to print black, 100%, for example, the component layer settings
will be overridden by the surface layer's setting.

It is worth noting that some items within Civil 3D (labels, in particular,
but there are others, as well) do not function as expected with STBs. It
seems that some of the component objects are created with Normal plot style,
which can manifest into frustrating oddities at plot time.

     As TomD has mentioned,
there are worms in that can.  I've had some success creating multiple
profile bands that overlap each other to achieve different shading for eg and fg
text values.  This type of remedy is not always possible.  The Parcels
issue is known and a "solution" was offered in a previous discussion I had (and
probably many others) on this DG.  It may seem strange, but I was shown to
create all Parcel objects on layer 0, then move them to more specific, desired
layers.  This deals with a ltscale issue as well...  In that former
post, I exchanged both a .ctb and .stb parcel label that achieved screening of
labels.  The .ctb lets you simply change colors while the .stb requires
crafty use of two or more labels.

     I had an exchange with
MAnderson on this subject here, and he later posted to the civil3d.com site and
got some comments from other users, as well.  The reasons I've listed there
still apply, and I'd recommend sticking with the .ctb (even though I love the
idea of the .stb).

We're all in this together,

It may be worth noting to the OP that I do not make
much use of parcels, to date.  My use of them has been limited to area
calcs, never yet for printed plans.

I have found acceptable (though less than ideal)
ways to deal with the issues I've had so far.  Had I experienced them prior
to being used to the STB approach, I may have been horribly
stymied.

I have found the problem with the dwg. For some unknown reason two of my parcel segment line labels was using a different plot style.

Now that I have gotten that out of the way.... Is there a way to have all surfaces created to automatically be below all other objects in the drawing?

Thanks

Not out of the box, to my knowledge.

You could probably code something to do it, or throw something like the
following into a toolbar button:

^C^C(command ".DRAWORDER" (ssget "X" '((0 . "AECC_TIN_SURFACE"))) "" "b")

WARNING: The above has not been fully tested or thought
out...........should be a quick, reasonable starting point, though.

Hmmm... I suppose you could set the Elev command above your highest project elevation for placement
of "dumb" linework??? Not sure what effect this might have on the C3d commands.
