Pipe Label expressions; include attachement location

Is it possible to add a smart pipe label that can re-calculate based on attachment location?

Essentially I want to be able to display the invert level (or centre, or crown, or at % of pipe height...) of a pipe in plan view at specific locations along the pipe, so the expression would be;

Start Invert - ((start invert - end invert)*(label location (distance from start)/pipe lenght)

I know i could create an alignment from pipe parts, then trace the network in profile view and use alignment labels but that is cumbersome.

Any suggestions or does 2012 have this solved?
