Paste surface error

I creating a dam using 15 surfaces.  I plan incorpoated the surfaces into one master surface to get the total earthfill pay quantity.  When I tried to paste surface 11 with the rest I got a error window: "error performing edit".  I can still edit the original surface and have been able to paste other surfaces into the master surface. Any suggestions?  Thanks

PS:  I am using Civil 3D 2010.

My guess would be-your surface 11 is a data shortcut.  It needs to be promoted to the dwg to paste it.

This is not true.  A surface may be posted as a datashortcut.  We do this all the time.  The error performing edit message is much more difficult to pin down.  It seems to occur for a variety of difficult to determine reasons, including data errors, circular references, too many surfaces pasted, surface name containing spaces, and general drawing errors.  It is quite vexing.
