newer version drawing will not open in 2014

Not sure why this happended, but i tried to open a drawing that had previously been saved while working in C3d 2014.  It gave me a message saying that the drawing was created with a newer verision of Civil 3d.  What!!?? How is this possible, and how do fix it, help is appreciated.

The first thing that comes to mind is that maybe you had an older version (such as 2012) open at the time and double-clicked on your file in windows.  If you double-click a file in windows with acad open, it'll try to open in that session of acad.

edit: This may not apply. I just noticed that you have a double signature. I only saw the 2012 at first and assumed you were trying to open it in that.

No Civil 3D objects created in 2014 will be compatible to 2012. Once you open it in 2014 everything is converted to that level of objects and can't go back.

If you must open it in 2012. You'll have to Wblock out all of the non-Civil 3D entities and use LandXML out to get the points, surfaces and alignments to an external file that can be imported into 2012.

After posting, I thought of another possiblity.  Could the previous version be set as the default app for dwg files on your pc?  Again, this involves double clicking in windows.

Allen, he's trying to open it in 2014 and it says it's been saved in a newer format.

Yeah. I just edited my post. I only caught the sig with 2012 and thought he might be trying to revert.

The only thing left that I can think of right now is that someone has opened this file in 2015 (some people out there do have the beta installed -- but if they're opening active production drawings with it, they're CRAZY).

Can you post your file?

Thanks for letting us know. It seems to me that it would better if the message was more along the lines of "One or more data shortcuts contains an error." As written, it certainly does lead one to wonder what's going on if you have the latest version and you're trying to open the file.
