National Cad Standard

Hello,
Our office provides civil design and construction plans for water, sewer and solid waste projects in rural Alaska. We have approximately 20 CAD users, one CAD coordinator and a fairly tight training budget. We have developed our own CAD standards and have had them in place for about 2 years. Our employees have begun to embrace these standards and we have also distributed them to our term contractors.

It has been suggested strongly that we adapt the National Cad Standard and re-train our staff to use it. We are being told that NCS will work well with Civil 3D and future generations of the software.
I would greatly appreciate any comment you might have on this subject.

If you take a look at C3D out of the box, it's close to the NCS, so why not
at least take a look.

In the same boat as your are Barb, we've been using APWA standards for the
past umpteen years and I can 'feel' the pain when I think about switching.
BUT, as James already stated, it's built into Civil 3D so why not? Well, I
can think of a dozen reasons why NOT to change, albeit in my opinion, most
of them are self-serving. So I'm probably going to bite the bullet, tell
all my users that we're changing whether they like it or not, and then run
away very fast! (:-O

Seriously though, if it makes sense and provides a mechanism to create a
standard that's more universal, I'm all for changing, although the process
is going to take some time to convert. The 'building blocks' are already in
place with Civil 3D, so that makes the process a wee bit easier.

BTW, gleen through this group for Mr. Wedding's posts, he has many
thoughtful and logical ideas that I've found helpful. Guess he knows what
he's doing!!
