Hi Dean,
Any thing you hear in response to this will be opinion based - including
mine.
I would never transfer a project from one design process to another. This
is even more important when the new process is in the learning phase.
Start only simple new projects in the new process until your skills levels
and your setting up of the process are ready for more complex projects.
As you mind will be in learning mode with the new process, you don't want it
to trying to resolve complex design problems at the same time.
With Civil 3D, you will most likely need to assign some considerable time
adjusting the settings to meet your specific drafting requirements and you
should give your most skilled user a couple of weeks to get on top of how
Civil 3D will work in your organisation and setting its display values to
your needs.
Although this seems like a high capital investment, you will find it will
repay in increased productivity in the long term.

I'm curious if and how users are moving older LDT projects to Civil 3D. Are
you converting all your project to C3D and making a clean break? Or, are
you keeping the old project in LDT and just starting the new projects in
C3D? Or, some combination of the two. Here at the City of Seattle we are
in the process of moving to C3D and need to come up with a game plan for
handling all projects. Appreciate any experiences that can be shared.
