Migration Guide

The Autodesk Civil 3D Technical Publications team would like to gather first-hand feedback on the process of migrating from Land Desktop to Civil 3D. We would appreciate it if those of you who have been through the process could respond to the following questions:

1. What information did you wish you had before you migrated?

2. Can you briefly summarize the tasks you performed and the order in which you performed them?

3. What information do you feel would be useful to include in a migration guide?

Thank you in advance for your comments.

Do you mean data for one project, or complete implemenation?

On the one project scenario:

1) I wish they would stop telling the sales force that you can "easily
translate data between Land Desktop and Civil 3D". The way many people use
Land Desktop, there is not a lot of data to move over. Many folks have a
project data breakdown somewhere around profiles and very often pipes. Even
so, things dont come forward the way you expect, especially if you don't
have a C3D template prepared for your standards.

I would recommend including a significant chapter on "what is project data"-
what is landxml, how civil 3d treats project data, the limitations of
bringing the data forward- such as pipe runs vs. pipe networks.

Also, a really clear explanation of what is C3D, Land Desktop Companion,
Civil Design Companion, and how they interact, what is changing, why it is
changing, why they should care. Also throw Survey into the mix- now that it
is both a separate program that runs with Land Desktop and built into Civil
3D, people are really confused. REALLY confused.

2) Export LandXML from Land Desktop, create wblock of dwg data in land
desktop, create new c3d drawing, import landxml, insert wblock, and begin
surgery.

I also wish I had known:

Bad results when migrating subdivision parcels and other reasons parcels
freak out

Why it is better to make some civil 3d objects from scratch instead of
convert from polylines if you want them to behave "like the demos do"

How to do better backups

VERY DETAILED description of the components of label styles and what they
do- things like attachment points, orientation, etc.
