Long Delay in Switching DWGs?

Anyone else notice a significant delay when switching between drawings in a
single session?

Yes - very much. I believe it is prospector has to rip through the drawing
to see what's in there.

Overall, the program seems to be very choppy when real data sets are loaded
in. I have 1 GB of ram on my machine, but the hesitations seem to start
before I exceed this amount (It usually hovers around 700-800 MB).

I have found that larger surfaces which used to be okay-to-slow in Land
Desktop, are unusable in civil 3d. We have had to break our existing
surfaces up into smaller pieces, which wouldn't be such a problem if
shortcuts weren't so slow.

*sigh*

You try a ramdrive yet? Pretty impressive over here.

Hey Numa;

Would that ramdrive be as in shuffling the PageFile off onto its own
Partition by itself?

If so, are you adjusting the Minimum and Maximum size per the old MS maxim -
1.5 times RAM for Min, and 3 times for Max?

Am I wrong in assuming (hoping) that 64 bit OS & Programs will get 3D on the
right track? Anyone know or speculate what we could expect?

Thanks,
Bill

Hopefully the Development Team is in Uncle Bill's good graces, and so have
been provided with Alpha/Beta versions of Longhorn?

I just saw where Intel is (finally) unveiling their 64 bit processor. How
many months behind AMD? http://tinyurl.com/yy0l
From - http://tinyurl.com/c93ox
64-Bit Takes Off

AMD's chip supports 64-bit computing, ushering in a new era for desktops.
But the best reason to buy the CPU is strong performance on familiar 32-bit
apps.

Tom Mainelli
From the November 2003 issue of PC World magazine [maybe I should have said
years :-)]

64-bit desktop computing has taken a significant step toward becoming a
pervasive reality: AMD's release of its Athlon 64 chips--and Apple's launch
of its G5 CPUs--means 64-bit processors, once reserved for servers and
high-end workstations, are now in PCs available on retail shelves.

I joined the Intel mutiny last year, and see no reason to go back so far.

NO, my best performance is with the pagefile turned off, with enough
memory you don't need on anyways.

How? you think that civil 3d is a 64bit program? Nope, it's a 32 bit
program. Having a 64bit os is only half the battle. in fact, I would
say it's only about a third.

Drivers have to be modified for a 64 bit kernel. And, since
manufacturers supply them, who knows how long till we have all the
drivers we use from day to day (No HP Designjet 500).

Your other apps that are running will be able to happily address a 64
bit memmory space, but there again, do you already have more than 4GB of
ram?

Yes, there are some advantages toa 64 bit OS, but just not for us yet.

AMD's athlon 64 has an integrated memory controller on the chip,
woohoo, it's faster, and it's faster in windows 32 bit.

x64 is not ready yet, and I would figure that autodesk is at least a 1
or 2 releases from making 64 bit binaries.
