lidar point cloud (LAS) files to Civil 3D

Does anyone know of a method to import lidar point cloud (.las) files into
Civil 3D surfaces? If C3D itself won't do it (and it doesn't seem to), is
there some middleman software that can convert the LAS files to NEZ (text)
points or contours which can then be used to create a C3D surface?

Do a web search for Convert LAS and you'll have more options.
C3D doesn't handle LAS directly.

Hi Ralph,

We will be releasing a new version of TopoGX shortly that loads LAS
files. From there you can do a multitude of things.

- You could simply save it out to CSV or as you call it ENZ.

- Contour it and save them out...but thats not recommended as you will
loose surface accuracy.

- You could also save out the automatically generated surface as a set
of DXF 3D Faces or even a set of polyface meshes.

If its only one small file, you could try posting it here and Ill take a
look at converting it to CSV. Dont forget to zip it though.

Hope this helps,
Dave

The MapWorks Mass Points processor will let you select hundreds of
binary LAS files, then limit the area to a closed object and
intelligently throw out some unnecessary points. If a LAS tile falls
completely outside the boundary its ignored in a fraction of a second.

Why not get a 14day full working demo and get the job done on us. We're
hoping you'll get hooked.

Email me at dotson [at] dotsoft [dot] com if you have any questions.

Dave,

I appreciate the offer, but I need to convert about five LAS files and they
average about 200MB each.

Terry,

This sounds exactly like what I need. I sent you an email to request a
trial version.

I cant believe noone suggested PowerCivil. We import Lidar LAS data. The same tools can also be found in Inroads and GEOPAK.

Strive for distortion don't you. PowerCivil (a competitive product) is
at least twenty times larger (because of *duplicate* functionality) and
probably 20x more *expensive* than our AUTOCAD ADD-ON. So you would
need to offer a 280 day trial to compare.

Could you imagine walking into a high performance car parts shop and asking for something that would boost the hp on your vehicle. The tech say's "There are many options....." and the guy behind you say's "I can't believe no one suggested a different vehicle".

I was being sarcastic for Terrys sake. 🙂

Good analogy though. Though High performance is a bit off when you look at all the negative postings. Besides alot of people have more than one car to serve multiple purposes. V8i is all about interoperable so designers can use the right tool for the job.

Of course you wouldn't find any negative posts on the Bentley NGs.

Those that frequent the DG's are mostly looking for solutions to problems or ways to enhance their work process. I'll admit that I sometimes express my frustrations here in the DG's when requesting help with a problem. When others express there frustrations, I don't see it as negative since I can understand where they are coming from. The reason I use this valuable resource is there are others that will see things differently and give you a completely different angle to approach the problem. This helps prevent wasted time trying to fix every little problem on my own while working through a project. Not to mention, it also keeps me positive. 🙂
