I doubt it will be as automated as a software made specifically for pit design, but you can certainly get the job done with Civil 3D.

Create a feature line at the bottom of the pit and use stepped offset to build the benches. Make a surface from those feature lines.

Create a corridor for the road and a surface from that corridor.

Create a blank surface, paste the benched pit surface and then the corridor surface.

Voila! It's the pits.

Comparing Vulcan and Civil 3D is like comparing apples with oranges as the packages are totally different and designed for different applications. Vulcan is a very specialised mine engineering program whereas Civil 3D has wider applications and a broader user base with many different workflow requirements.

Should someone feel the urge to do a lot of coding I'm sure a lot of automation could be achieved within Civil via .NET etc but until then, as Tim said, it can be done in Civil 3D but it is a very manual process...Smiley Happy

Open pit design is a much harder marketing sell compared with fully rendered road schemes and buildings which is what you always see in the Autodesk promotional material....

work in mining area
quite civil 3d use
a very useful software
I know thousands of people who use civil 3d in mining
I think autodesk should see mining as customer

Coudnt agree more Alex. There is a lot Civil 3D developers could learn from these mining applications that could be applied to both the Landfill/Urban Development and Mining/Dam Design customers like you and me who are using Civil 3D exclusively.
