The plan size of the surface is TOTALLY irrelevant. You could get a surface
of a billion times this area with only three points. The height range is
also irrelevant.
The amount of computation the computer has to do to process your surface
only relates to the number of triangles in the surface.
If you are displaying contours, then the number of contours to be displayed
is relevant - the more you display the more computations. If you smooth the
contours, then there are more computations.
12Mb files do not respond instantly to many things, but should not be
straining a 2Gb RAM system.
You should be checking the normal AutoCAD things, like Purge, Audit etc. to
see if you drawing is not carrying some minor corruption.

The file is about 12MB. The surface is about 12000ft long and about 100ft
wide, average width. The elevation range is from about 7145 to 7165 fasl.
