Is 2GB of RAM enough for Civil 3D?

Civil 3D is running really slow, many times so slow I get the "Not Responding" and have to Contr+Alt+Dlt and recover the drawing. It took me 15 min of waiting to open the properties of my sample lines.

Has anyone played with adding more RAM and seen better performance? What amount of RAM seems to work best?

I'm running on an almost 2yo laptop with 2GB and doing fine. Something else
is sucking your memory down. How big is your file? The surface?

The file is about 12MB. The surface is about 12000ft long and about 100ft wide, average width. The elevation range is from about 7145 to 7165 fasl.

Hi Cody,

The plan size of the surface is TOTALLY irrelevant. You could get a surface
of a billion times this area with only three points. The height range is
also irrelevant.

The amount of computation the computer has to do to process your surface
only relates to the number of triangles in the surface.

If you are displaying contours, then the number of contours to be displayed
is relevant - the more you display the more computations. If you smooth the
contours, then there are more computations.

12Mb files do not respond instantly to many things, but should not be
straining a 2Gb RAM system.

You should be checking the normal AutoCAD things, like Purge, Audit etc. to
see if you drawing is not carrying some minor corruption.
