importing points from the same file

i have imported some points from a csv file. Surveyors have gone out and taken some more shots and now I am importing the same file that has additional points. I usually just do an overwrite to replace the old with the new. I am just curious about the "merge" options. Not sure how that works, or what that does. Can anyone enlighten me on that ? Thanks.

Merge will find the available point numbers in the existing set of drawing points and will fill those gaps.

Let's say the existing points are numbers 1-10, 15, 20, 25-500. The incoming points will be numbered 11-14, 16-19,21-24, 501+.
