Importing from txt file problem...no points were transferred from source

We have been trying to import points from a text file in Civil 3D 2008 and was only successful once. The format is: PointNumber, DECDEG Lat, DECDEG Long, PointElev. In setting up the format we use the Coordinate zone transform MI83-SIF. After setting the format, we load the txt file and Parse it and it looks fine in the Point File Format dialog.

We then start a new drawing and try to import the file and we get the "a non-LL coordinate zone must be set..." error. Then on the prospectus for the drawing (Drawing1) we edit the drawing settings and set the same zone. After setting the dawing zone we try to import again and the "a non-LL coordinate zone..." error is replaced with "no points were transferred from the source" error. We tried different settings under the "Transformation" tab of the Drawing Settings (namely just the two check boxes "Apply transform settings" and "Apply sea level scale factor") and no luck. We also tried to change some settings under the Point Feature Settings (i.e. Allow Checked-In Points to be Modified set to True). But we get the "no points were transferred..." error every time -- except once, but I don't know why.

What are we missing? We are able to import the file using LDD Companion 2008 (which we now do as a work-around), but can't figure out why it doesn't work under Civl 3D.

Thanks in advance.

Can you provide the text file so we can take a look at it?

Sure...its simply a comma delimited file.

OK, I got it to come in.

At first it didn't, but what I did was to check the 'Do coordinate data expansion if possible' box and all came in fine then.

Try that and see if it works for you.

Yep, I tried that too..several combination of those 3 check boxes "Do coordinate ...", but no luck. I think when I was successful, I had all 3 boxes checked. I then erased the points (to see if I could reproduce the successful import with a different combination of checked boxes) and had no luck. I then tried all 3 again and still wasn't successful. If you could, since you did get a successful import, try erasing the points, select different boxes (or none at all), and try another import. If not successful, try the checking the same boxes you had before and import. In my case it still wouldn't import.

Thanks for looking into this. Its sort of conforting to know that I'm not the only one having issues.

Wade,

Wouldn't you want a Lat/Long coord system for the
point file definition instead of the state plane definition?

LL84?

Then set your drawing to MI83-SIF.

Mr Mills, it looks like that is what was needed. We don't set the coordinate zone transformation in the point file format ( just leave the box un-checked), then set the columns as before.

Then make sure the drawing settings are set to the correct zone and click "Apply transform settings" under the Transformation tab. - I also make sure the "Do coordinate transformation if possible" is checked too.

I've tried it a couple of times, with a few different settings and it was able to import everytime with the new import point format. Thanks to all who helped out.

AHA!

Our default template is set to a coordinate zone (in my case it's PA83-SF). I overlooked that detail.

Thanks Nourinho. I've tried everything and, at the end, my problem it was ID = 0...
