Each time I attempt to import a USGS .adf file the program becomes un-responsive and locks up

Convert it to Geotiff format thru a free tool like Qgis, sir.

And import it how? Will it be converted to a tiff? I need to model it?

What is your OS and system specs? You'll need at least 8GB ram and 64 bit OS.

Also, consider reducing the area of coverage by applying a data clip boundary. That way you can reduce processing. Once you get a surface built you can adjust the clip boundary if you need to expand the coverage or limit it to different areas. You could also make multiple surfaces from the source file, each covering different areas using clip boundaries.

I don't know if using a GeoTiff would reduce the processing requirements as it should have the same amount of data.

What do you say Antonio?
